<p>Nathan Weekley, a 17-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department, was demoted from a detective in the Sex Crimes Unit to a patrol officer after an offensive Facebook post appeared on his personal page, Police Chief James Craig announced in a press conference Monday.|Weekley who is white, was demoted for a Facebook rany that called the Black Lives Matter movement “terrorists” and “racists.”<br />
On July 8, Weekly wrote on Facebook personal page : “For the first time in my nearly 17 years as a law enforcement officer I contemplated calling in to work in response to the outrageous act perpetrated against my brothers,” “It seems like the only response that will demonstrate our importance to society as a whole. The only racists here are the piece of s&#8212; black Lives Matter terrorists and their supporters.”</p>

<p>The unseeming post was was put up by Weekley after Micah Johnson shot twelvwe police officers killing five in Dallas on Thursday during a protest march over the police related shooting deaths of a week that also saw cops fatally shoot Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota.<br />
Detroit Police Chief james Craig said at a news conference where he announced the demotion: “It’s not about white or black,” Craig said at the conference. “When you put on this uniform, you can’t make statements that contradict what we stand for as a department.”<br />
Chief Craig told the media that he took “very quick action” against Detective Weekely, but insisted that the officer was still entitled to his due process.<br />
“We have to let that run,” Chief Craig said. “That’s by contract and certainly out of fairness. We are aware that he posted and he has since removed the post and we recognize that it is still trending. We are concerned as a organization because it does tend to undermine all of the good work that I just described that we’re doing in the community.”</p>

<p>Chief Craig also announced that an internal investigation had opened into Weekley’s post.<br />
“If you post something that is contrary to your role as a police officer, our oath of office, we will certainly take prompt and decisive action,” the police chief said at the conference. “Preliminarily, it’s certainly inappropriate, it’s certainly unprofessional.”<br />
He further stated that he was looking into another “concerning” message from a black female supervisor on the force, but didn’t elaborate. Meanwhile, the Michigan National Action Network is still calling for the police officer to be fired.<br />
“We have a nation on edge due to a racial divide and the slaughter of Black Americans by police that literally get away with murder. Detroit, America&#8217;s blackest and poorest city, cannot afford to have a policeman on duty so filled with hate for the dominant population of Detroit,”<br />
NAN political director Sam Riddle said: “Supporters of Black Lives Matter just held a peaceful non-violent rally in Detroit attended by over a thousand individuals without incident. Detroit does not need the hateful intolerance of Weekley.”</p>

<p>The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality called the demotion “a good first step.”<br />
Weekley’s brother, Joseph, is a former SWAT officer in Detroit who had manslaughter charges dismissed in 2015 after shooting and killing a 7-year-old girl in a May 2010 raid.<br />
Aiyana Stanley-Jones was shot in the head in May 2010 while she was asleep on her family’s living room couch. Joseph Weekley’s first trial ended without a verdict and his second ended with a hung jury.</p>
