In 2014 Whitehurst, a former AP English teacher in Redlands, was charged with 41 felony counts of unlawful relations wit her students. She pled guilty to six counts of unlawful sex with three minors. She has a baby by one of the boys
The suit was brought against the school district the following year after the student’s lawyer, Vince Finaldi, claimed the district ‘turned a blind eye’ to the improper conduct.
‘The size of this settlement represents the gravity of the damage done to this young victim and his family and it also highlights the extreme malfeasance and neglect by school officials who turned a blind eye to the criminal conduct of a teacher and failed to protect a student,’ Finaldi said.

Sexual contact between Whitehurst and the student began in 2012 when the boy was 16.
The student claimed he was stalked by Whitehurst prior to their relationship and that she told him she could not get pregnant.

Four of the counts were for unlawful sex with this particular victim who fathered Whitehurst’s child. The two other counts were for the other victims, both by then adults. She had a baby girl in June 2013.
In 2014, the former Citrus Valley High School teacher was sentenced to one year behind bars with five years probation. Her teaching credentials were revoked and she was required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life
Redlands Unified School District officials went for settlement but assumed no fault, placing all the blame on LauraWhitehurst.
The student who fathered her child was present at the birth and has shared custody of the baby. The custody agreement however, involves a court-ordered representative that facilitates custody exchanges as there is a no-contact order between the child’s parents.
