Young couple found dead on Florida highway on New Year’s Eve – three sons found inside their car, unharmed

A Florida couple was found dead on a highway while their three sons remained inside the parked car early Saturday, officials said.
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper found the bodies of Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 31, outside their maroon SUV which was parked along Interstate 4 near DeLand City when he checked up on the car that morning.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine their cause of death. Officials said there were no signs of foul play.Daniel Kelsey1.png

Jerrell Jackson of Port Orange who grew up with Daniel Kelsey and they attended both Campbell Middle School and Spruce Creek High School together,  told The News-Journal he was having a hard time processing his close friend’s death. Jerell Jackson, Daniel Kelsey’s friend, described him as a mechanic who did “awesome work on cars” and as a devoted father to his children.
“I loved Dan like a brother … every time you saw him, you saw his kids,” Jackson told The News-Journal.

Deputies responded to the scene around 2:08 a.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 4 after a trooper spotted the vehicle parked with its hazard lights on.
The trooper discovered Daniel and Heather Kelsey unconscious outside the vehicle. They were pronounced dead a short time later.
Officials said the couple’s three sons, aged from 8 months to 4 years old, were found in the car unharmed.
An investigator with the state Department of Children and Families also responded to the scene. The boys were taken to Halifax Health Medial Center in Daytona Beach for checkups. Officials said the investigation is still ongoing.An autopsy will be conducted to determine causes of death, Gant said.
