The suspect, Yasmine Elder, 24, got into a fight with her significant other, Darrius Ellis, 26, while sitting inside a van.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Elder was allegedly able to overpower Ellis, hold him down and pour the substance down his throat. The incident is said to have taken place Monday at 1:45 a.m.
When officers discovered Ellis later that morning, he was on the ground. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead.
Autopsy results from the medical examiner’s office determined that Ellis, who has a five-year-old son, died of “complications from forcible administration of a caustic substance.” The incident was ruled a homicide.
Chicago Tribune reported the victim’s grandfather, Clarence Hebron, praising his now-deceased grandson, suggesting “everybody loved him.”
Hebron told the paper he saw his grandson nearly every day, and last saw him Sunday night. He got the horrific phone call about Ellis’ death just hours later.
Elder was arrested at her South Paulina Street home, about 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to police. She was due in court Thursday.
