Johnston was found dead by apparent suicide five days later in Auburn.
The investigation is now closed since Johnston, the prime suspect is dead. He is not believed to have been connected to any other crimes, Gallant said.
Thursday’s news conference was the first time authorities in Maine confirmed that Johnston was a suspect in the rape case, according to the Bangor Daily News.
