Carrie L. Bernard, 37, of Milwaukee, was arrested Thursday after being spotted by a Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy entering the on-ramp of a state highway with a young her 8-year-old-son steering the car, while sitting on her lap.
The deputy then pulled Bernard over and noticed the 8-year-old crying before telling the officer that he didn’t want to go to jail.

Bernard who initially refused to comply with the deputy until his supervisor arrived, proceeded to fail several sobriety tests. Once in the back of the deputy’s cruiser, she was caught on camera saying that she planned to get back to the bottle as soon as possible.
“I think I might have a drink after this,” Bernard said, according to video inside the cruiser obtained by WTMJ.

Deputy Whitney Hendon said neither Bernard nor her son was wearing a seat belt when he pulled alongside her SUV. When Bernard pulled over moments later, the boy was in the front passenger seat wearing a seat belt, with a dog sitting in the back seat.
Arresting officer, Herndon told WISN: “She stated there was no one who operated the car other than her,” Herndon said.
“That’s when the small child began to cry. He said, ‘I don’t want to go to jail.’”
The boy has since been turned over to child protective services.
“It was concerning to me the mom would risk her 8-year-old child so she could operate a vehicle,” Hendon continued. “You’re risking your child and the public. It’s scary to think about.”
