Monday morning arrested a prominent doctor from Miami was arrested Monday in connection with the patient care related death of an elderly woman in Key Largo&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Raul Arcadio Tamayo&comma; 66&comma; was arrested Monday morning at his home on two counts of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult&period;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<&sol;header>&NewLine;<div class&equals;"mod-body">&NewLine;<div class&equals;"story-content">&NewLine;<p>His bond was set at &dollar;200&comma;000&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The Monroe County sheriff&&num;8217&semi;s office reportedly&comma; have been under investigation Dr Tamayo and his business since November 2016&comma; as well as&comma;  and other state and federal agencies&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;A key staffer who worked under Tamayo&&num;8217&semi;s supervision&comma; Amarylis Maristan&comma; 47&comma; is wanted on the same charges&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;According to authorities&comma; Tamayo and Maristan operated two unlicensed elder living facilities in Plantation Key from April 2016 until October 2016&period; A second establishment operated in Kay Largo from October 2016 until December 2016 &period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Tamayo and Maristan&comma; the sheriff&&num;8217&semi;s department said&comma;  were caring for six women in the Keys who were older than 80&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;All the patients had chronic and acute medical conditions that required medical care and multiple prescription medications&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The doctor allegedly&comma; failed to provide care for the patients at the facilities&comma; then falsified records to indicate that he was providing care&period;In addition&comma; authorities said&comma; the doctor knew the facilities were unlicensed and knew that Maristan who supervised the facilities was not medically trained in any way&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Tamayo was also paid by Medicare for services he was not providing&comma; to the death of one<&sol;strong><&sol;h6>&NewLine;<p>Monroe County sheriffs detective and an investigator from the Florida Department of Children and Families kicked off the investigation after receiving a report of possible elder<br &sol;>&NewLine;DCF was contacted by the Hospital after an 85-year-old woman was brought in with cardiac arrest&comma;  covered in urine with severe bedsores&comma; some of them infected&comma; sheriff&&num;8217&semi;s office spokesperson&comma; Becky Herrin said&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;In the dementia care facility&comma; all the patients were confined to beds or wheelchairs&comma; were diagnosed with memory loss or dementia and were incontinent&comma; Herrin said&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Investigators found that a majority of the women had UTIs &lbrack;urinary tract infections&rsqb; and bedsores&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The patient who sparked the investigation&comma; died the next day&period; &period; Medical records show that at the time of the woman&&num;8217&semi;s death&comma; she was underweight&comma; suffered from malnutrition and had been suffering from seizures&period; An autopsy showed that she died of &&num;8220&semi;complications of septic shock due to pneumonia&comma;&&num;8221&semi; Herrin said<br &sol;>&NewLine;Detectives said Tamayo was aware of her history of seizures and had billed the government for seizure medication that was never given to the victim&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Maristan&comma; who was the woman&&num;8217&semi;s caregiver&comma; was interviewed by detectives at the Key Largo facility&comma; where Maristan also lived&period; Herrin said she told them that Tamayo made house calls to the home&comma; where he had seen the patient and prescribed medication as needed to all the elderly people who lived there&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The remaining patients in the facility were sent to hospital for evaluation before being transferred to a licensed care facility&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Tamayo who graduated in 1977 from a medical school in Havana&comma; Cuba&comma; practices medicine from his office at The Medical Health Of Miami&comma; clinic&period; He is listed as being non-Board Certified&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Authorities said the victim who died had not been treated for bedsores or for pneumonia&comma; from which she ultimately died&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Detectives said Tamayo falsified medical records that claimed that he had seen the victim in person&period; Law enforcement investigators said Tamayo also failed to treat a second woman at the facility for pneumonia and Parkinson&&num;8217&semi;s disease&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;However&comma; he did admit  that he was responsible for medical supervision at the two facilities as well as&comma; knowing that Maristan was unlicensed and untrained&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Detectives are still searching for the now fugitive Maristan&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;
