Neighbors and friends watch in shocked disbelief
Isabelle Martinez remained in the home for more than 24 hours, with the bodies, before police arrived
The family lived in a one-story home in Loganville — a Gwinnett County city of 10,000 people about 35 miles east of Atlanta.
All of the children were under age 10, officials said, and the father was in his mid-30s.
Their bodies were still inside the house as of 9 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The neighbor told WSB-TV that the family moved to Georgia from Illinois about a month ago. Two SUVs with Illinois plates were seen in the home’s driveway on Thursday.
Neighbors said Isabel Martinez had been severely depressed since the recent death of her father, who lives in Mexico.
“She said her dad passed away months ago, she was in depression and we go to her house and pray sometimes for her dad,” according to Letty Perez, a neighbor.
Martinez is currently being interviewed by police.
Officials don’t have a motive yet, but indicated that she was the prime suspect.
“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” Gwinnett police said in an emailed statement. “This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood and community. We are hoping and praying that the remaining victim survives her injuries and makes a full recovery.”
Investigators believe the suspect, called 911 at 4:47 a.m. from inside the Emory Lane home, located in unincorporated Loganville. Martinez told police she is the mother of all five children and the man was the father of the children.
All of the victims appeared to be stabbed in what cops described as a “horrendous crime.”
A neighbor told WSB-TV that the suspect was in the Loganville home for as long as 24 hours before cops were called.
She was immediately taken into custody Thursday.
