A Georgia mother knew her boyfriend, Damylo Morrow, sexually abused her young daughter but didn’t report him because of her “hectic” schedule, police said.
According to a release by the Gwinnett County district attorney’s office, the victim’s grandmother brought the child to Scottish Rite Hospital in April 2015 telling staff that the girl had been molested in December of 2014.
While at the hospital, the girl told a social worker that her mother’s boyfriend had massaged her legs, before taking off her pants and touching her genitals.
Investigators said the grandmother knew about the sexual assault when it happened, but never alerted authorities because Morrow was already in jail on an unrelated charge.
The mother also knew of the assault and told a detective that she failed to report Morrow because “she had a hectic work schedule” and he had told her the allegation wasn’t true.
According to AJC, when the woman and her daughter went to Norcross Police Department for an interview, the mother told the little girl to lie and say Morrow never touched her.
Investigators said the girl initially denied the assault happened, but later told them about the assault.
Damylo Morrow, was convicted Thursday of sexual battery and sentenced to three years in prison. He was acquitted of child molestation following a three-day trial.
In addition to getting three years in prison, Morrow was sentenced to two years of probation and has to register as a sex offender.
The woman, whose identity is being withheld to protect her 6-year-old daughter, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree cruelty to children and was sentenced to eight years of probation, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
She’s also not allowed to have unsupervised visits with her daughter while on probation.
