A Kansas man who fatally shot an engineer from India after shouting “get out of my country” at him and his friend has been sentenced to life in prison.
Adam Purinton was sentenced Friday for the first-degree murder of 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was having a beer with his friend Alok Madasani at Austin’s Bar and Grill in Olathe on Feb. 22, 2017.
“Our goal is to make sure that he never walks in the community again,” Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said after Purinton’s sentencing, according to the Kansas City Star.
“That he spends the rest of his life in the penitentiary.”

Purinton also pled guilty to the attempted murders of Madasani, 32, and Ian Grillot, who tried to intervene during the shooting.
Adam W. Purinton was sentenced in Johnson County District Court, where he pled guilty in March to a charge of first-degree murder for killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla.
Judge Charles Droege ordered Purinton to serve a maximum sentence on all three charges and to run consecutively, the Kansas City Star reported. He won’t be eligible for parole for 77 1/2 years.

Adam W. Purinton pled guilty Tuesday in Johnson County to a charge of first-degree murder in the February 2017 killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla.
Purinton, 52, of Olathe Kansas, also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree murder for shooting Alok Madasani, a co-worker of Kuchibhotla’s, and Ian Grillot, who had come to the aid of the two other men.
Prosecutors have said that Purinton verbally harassed Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, another Indian man. Purinton started taunting the men by yelling racial slurs at them, witnesses said, before he was thrown out of the Olathe business.
Employees asked Purinton to leave, but he returned a short time later to shout “Get out of my country” before he returned a short time later and unleashed a fusillade of 9mm bullets, killing Kuchibhotla and wounding Madasani. Grillot was also wounded.

A victim impact statement by Kuchibhotla’s widow, Sunayana Dumala, read in court said she wished Purinton “had the ability to see beyond my husband’s skin color and the beautiful and kindhearted person underneath it.”
Purinton will also faces federal hate crime charges and his plea hearing is scheduled for May 21.
