Brittnay Ryals Paonessa, 27, was charged with murder on Friday after her husband, 26-year-old Brandyn Lloyd Paonessa, died of gunshot wounds the day before.
Medics tried to save Sgt Paonessa after he was found injured from the shotgun attack in Phenix City but he succumbed to his injuries.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Lee Road. Deputies arrived to find Brandyn Lloyd Paonessa, 26, in the yard suffered from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, said sheriff’s Capt. Van Jackson.
The couple had welcomed their fourth child, three months earlier but the soldier had grown concerned about his wife’s mental health.
A day after the alleged shooting Brittnay was charged with gunning down Brandyn Paonessa on Thursday in the front yard of a home in Phenix City, WTVM reports.
Paramedics tried to save the father of four, but Brandyn, a 26-year-old infantryman at Fort Benning who was shot once in the chest, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a shotgun from the home and have preserved the weapon as evidence, deputies said.

Investigators, sheriff’s Capt. Jackson said, found evidence that led to the victim’s wife, Brittnay Ryals Paonessa, as the prime suspect.
She was taken into custody and charged with murder the next day. A shotgun was recovered from the scene.
Court records show a history of marital discord between the couple, who married in 2013 and have three young children together.
Brittnay Paonessa also has another child from a previous relationship. Brandyn Paonessa was arrested last year on a third-degree domestic violence charge involving his wife after he was accused of punching her in the stomach because she looked through his cell phone. That charge was dismissed at the wife’s request.
Court documents say he had filed an emergency ‘protection from abuse order’ on Monday against his wife, seeking Protection from Abuse against his wife and requested immediate temporary custody of their children.
The filing states he was concerned about his wife’s mental health and claims that she refused to have treatment at a rehabilitation center.
According to WSFA, Brandyn had accused Brittany Paonessa of stalking him as well and his family and friends.
In his request, the husband said his wife had threatened his job by lying to his bosses. On one occasion she had driven a truck into the house within three feet of their children and harassed all of their friends. He described her as “very unstable.”
The couple who have been married since 2013, share three children aged three, two and two months. Brittany has an eight-year-old child from a previous relationship.

The youngest baby was born in March, and it is not known whether Mrs Paonessa suffered from any postpartum health problems.
Postpartum depression can cause severe, long-lasting health problems including anger and rage.
The suspect is now being held at a detention facility on a $150,000 bond, it is reported.
According to her online accounts, she had worked as a server in an Irish pub and grill in Clarksville, Tennessee.
She had previously been a cashier at a book store in Columbus, Georgia, and a waitress at a Hooters restaurant in the same city in 2012 and 2013.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the victim suffered a shotgun wound to his abdomen in the front yard of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics on Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.
Brandyn Paonessa was described as an infantryman who had served in the Army since September 2013.
A statement provided by Fort Benning to WTVM read offered ‘sincere condolences’ to Mr Paonessa’s relatives and friends.
The soldier belonged to Task Force 1-28, 3rd Infantry Division, and had twice served in Afghanistan, they said.
