The 22-year-old adopted son of former NFL football player Barry Bennett and his wife has been arrested in Mexico charged with shooting dead his parents in their rural Minnesota home earlier this week.
A criminal complaint was signed Friday against Bennett, charging him with the shooting deaths of Barry and Carol Bennett, both 63, inside their Long Prairie home.
Dylan John Bennett was apprehended by Mexican law enforcement in Cancun after Todd County investigators used his cell phone, credit card and ATM activity since Friday to locate him there, the sheriff’s office confirmed on Saturday.
Using intelligence developed by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension [BCA] and the FBI, Mexican law enforcement located Dylan Bennett shortly before noon today at a hotel in Cancun, Mexico, and took him into custody,’ the sheriff’s office said.


Bennett will be transported back to Minnesota by the FBI for arraignment ‘in the coming days,’ the sheriff’s office said. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
Bennett had reportedly contacted Todd County Sheriff Steve Och on Saturday to indicate he would turn himself in.
However, Mexican authorities arrested him before investigators could communicate the information to them.
Both were discovered two days earlier by authorities who came to the home after a friend had gone there to do a welfare check, according to the Todd County sheriff’s office.
The couple had not responded to phone calls or text messages for about a day.

Barry Bennett, a defensive tackle and defensive end, was a third-round draft pick for the Saints in 1978, and spent six seasons with the Jets, from 1982 to 1987.
After he left football, he returned to his home state, Minnesota, where he was a gym teacher and football and wrestling coach for the Long Prairie School District before he retired about five years ago.
