The Atlanta college student who was reported missing and later found dead had been strangled by her roommate’s boyfriend before the couple placed her body in a plastic bin and dumped it in a park, court documents say.
Fulton County Superior Court released more details on the death of 21-year-old Alexis Crawford on Tuesday.
According to court documents, Crawford and her roommate, Jordyn Jones, 21, got into a physical altercation at their Atlanta apartment after buying alcohol on October 31.
Jones’ boyfriend, Barron Brantley, also 21, allegedly intervened and choked Crawford to death with his hands.
The warrant for Jones’ arrest states that she ‘smother[ed] the victim with a black trash bag until Crawford stopped breathing and was deceased’.
The couple then proceeded to place Crawford’s body in a plastic bin, which they left at Exchange Park in Decatur, documents say.
Investigators said Jones denied knowing where Crawford was, but Brantley later admitted to killing her – Both suspects were charged with malice murder after Crawford’s body was recovered.
Her body was discovered in the Dekalb County park on Friday, bringing the desperate eight-day search to a tragic end.
Police Chief Erika Shields said investigators have not determined the official motive but noted that Crawford had filed a police report on October 27 describing ‘unwanted kissing and touching’ by Brantley.
Days before she went missing, Crawford told authorities that Brantley had rubbed her shoulder and kissed her on the neck while they were drinking together, according to a police report.
Crawford said that Brantley claimed he mistook her for his girlfriend, Jones.
She said she entered a restroom by herself after Brantley followed her to her room.
Jones told detectives that she found Crawford locked inside the bathroom wearing only a bra, the police report states. Investigators also recovered a ‘pair of cut panties’ in the bathroom.
Jones said that Crawford told her she had passed out and did not remember what had happened.
Brantley said he did not have sex with Crawford, according to Jones.
Crawford underwent a rape examination at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The results of that examination were not specified in the police report.
After Crawford was reported missing, Jones told detectives that she was not ‘on speaking terms’ with her roommate because of a ‘separate incident’ that was not disclosed in the missing person report.
The report also mentioned a ‘separate incident’ on October 26, citing friends who said Crawford had started sleeping in the living room because she wasn’t comfortable in her own bedroom.
Rev Markel Hutchins told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Crawford family ‘knew Jordyn, they liked Jordyn’.
‘There was never a reason to suspect that Jordyn would do anything wrong or ill to Alexis,’ Hutchins said.
‘One family member described them as two peas in a pod… To go from that to where we are today, it’s unthinkable, unspeakable.’
Police said one of the suspects led them to Crawford’s body. Brantley was charged hours later on Friday and Jones was charged Saturday.
They are both being held at Fulton County Jail.
