<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A man who broke into his ex-girlfriend&#8217;s home in Livermore Falls, Maine, zip-tied her family and rigged the property with explosives has been shot dead by police after an 18-hour standoff. <br>All three hostages were safe after the standoff at 48 Knapp St., Lt. Jason Madore of the Maine State Police said on Tuesday. Police say the day-long ordeal suffered by the Smith family began when Donald White, 44, burst into their home in Livermore Falls home early on Monday.<br>One occupant managed to flee and notify police but three others inside the home were held hostage by White, according to police. <br>Kenny Smith, the last of three hostages to eventually be freed, said White had subdued him with a Taser and fired three shots at him with &#8216;some kind of a gun&#8217; during the standoff.<br>Smith said White was his daughter Amie&#8217;s ex-boyfriend and had once lived in the home. <br>Amie Smith managed to escape from the house. Her father, Kenney Smith, 64, was the last hostage released early Tuesday. He was reunited with family members after being held for more than 18 hours, according to police.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A bomb squad, tactical team and hostage negotiators from Maine&#8217;s state police descended on the property before officers eventually killed White at the end of the 18-hour standoff. <br>Afterward, the bomb squad had to deal with explosive devices&#8217;that were left inside the home. There were still multiple explosive devices at the house, and a robot and other equipment were at the scene Tuesday afternoon, along with the state’s bomb team and special forces vehicle, Lt. Madore said<br>Police lieutenant Joe Sage said cops had been &#8216;met with extremely dangerous conditions which developed into a situation involving multiple hostages&#8217;. <br>Speaking to WMTV 8 News, Smith said that White had tasered him and threatened the other hostages at gunpoint. <br>&#8216;It was about 2.30 in the morning, and I thought I heard a noise &#8211; then I woke up, he turned the light on and he says, &#8220;just go along with it&#8221;,&#8217; Smith said. <br>&#8216;He Tasered me&#8230; He had some kind of a gun. I don&#8217;t know what it was. He took three shots. I could see powder come out of the end.&#8217;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">White was killed by Maine State Police, and the three hostages are safe.<br>During the standoff, two people were released but Smith was detained until early Tuesday. <br>Smith said he suffered injuries to his face, arms and leg during the standoff.<br>Asked about visible injuries to his head and arms, he pointed to his legs and said he had suffered a &#8216;slash&#8217; in what he described as a &#8216;hell of a night&#8217;. <br>&#8220;Big slash there. I just came from the doctor&#8217;s office. Just a hell of a night,” Smith said.<br>Smith said White used a stun gun on him. He and the others were tied up with zip ties and threatened at gunpoint.<br>Police said they have responded to the house several times in the past for domestic violence matters, according to Livermore Falls Police Chief Ernest Steward Jr.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The incident began when Livermore Falls police responded to a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sunjournal.com/2021/03/08/house-in-livermore-falls-broken-into-hostages-taken/?rel=related" target="_blank">report of an armed intruder</a> with zip ties at the residence about 5:30 a.m. Monday, Steward said Monday.<br>Four people were at the house. One escaped and reported the situation to police. Two other hostages were freed later in the day.<br>Police repeatedly tried to get White to come out of the house Monday night by calling out to him through a megaphone from an armored vehicle blocking the street, with lights shining on the house. A negotiator told White several times police were trying to call him and he needed to answer his phone.<br>“It is time to let Ken out,” the negotiator said.<br>The negotiator also asked White to show Smith in a window. At one point, police told White they would give him his medication. As of 10 p.m., that had not happened.<br>The officer who fired the shot that killed White is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The Maine Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation due to the use of deadly force. <br>State police responded with a tactical team, bomb squad and crisis negotiator, while county and federal law enforcement officials also joined others at the scene. <br>The state trooper who used deadly force was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, during the investigation, Madore said. <br>The medical examiner will determine how White died, he said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Neighbors said they could not believe it when they saw the Maine State Police Tactical Team, bomb squad and law enforcement from across Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts respond to the neighborhood.<br>&#8220;Pretty shocking really. Kenny is really one of the nicest guys you could know,” neighbor Byron Bean said.<br>&#8220;My heart goes out to them. I want them to know that the community is behind them. We will support them in whatever they need,” neighbor Melissa Moody said.<br>The Spruce Mountain School District closed schools Monday because the school resource officer was concerned that the suspect might have planted a bomb, Superintendent Scott Albert told News Center Maine.<br>A Walmart store in Farmington was also evacuated because of a bomb threat, but it was unclear if that was related, officials said.</p>
