<p>A notorious Indian gangster has been gunned down in a courtroom by two hitmen from a rival gang who posed as lawyers to gain access to the court. The assassins were then shot dead by police following a gunfight in the courtroom. <br>Jitender Maan, 30 and Delhi&#8217;s most-wanted mobster who was known by his nickname Gogi, was attending a hearing today in connection with a murder case at the Rohini courthouse in New Delhi, Friday . <br>He was arrested last year on charges of murder, attempted murder, extortion, possession of illegal arms, carjacking and land grabbing.<br>The hitmen had been waiting inside the court when Gogi was brought in for questioning. Minutes after he arrived, the killers &#8216;whipped out pistols and opened fire&#8217;, a senior police officer told <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/2-dead-in-shootout-at-rohini-court-gangster-gogi-was-target-7531473/">The Indian Express</a>. <br>The two assailants, identified as Rahul and Moris, were standing at the entrance of the courtroom. They posed as lawyers and entered along with Gogi. <br>“Within seconds of entering, they opened firing eight-ten rounds at him from close range. Gogi was hit by five-six bullets,” said a police officer who was present in the courtroom.<br>“Personnel of the Special Cell fired in retaliation. In total, eight rounds were fired by both the teams of the Special Cell. Police returned fire killing the two men on the spot. <br>“For around 40 seconds, there was absolute chaos inside the courtroom,” the officer added. <br>Gogi was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead </p>

<p>After the killers opened fire, armed police at the scene shot both dead. Authorities said they were members of a rival local gang but their names have not yet been released. <br>Gogi who was born and raised in and around Delhi, in circumstances that should not have seen him turning into the a career criminal he was at the end. <br>He attended Delhi University where he was described as a &#8216;bright and promising&#8217; student. However, he dropped out of school following his father&#8217;s death in 2010, according to the Times of India, and began dealing in property before becoming a criminal.</p>

<p>He quickly moved from property to a life of crime.<br>A detective involved in the investigation of both the Gogi and Tillu gangs said their rivalry dates back to their college days, when both were students at Delhi University and clashed over student politics. <br>Gogi was first arrested for shooting at a man named &#8216;Praveen&#8217; in 2010. It is unclear what sparked that confrontation. <br>Later that same year he was involved in yet another attempted shooting, this time over elections at Delhi University that saw A friend of Gogi&#8217;s, who was running for a post in the student government, was beaten by a man named Sunil Tajpuria and his friends. Gogi is believed to have launched a revenge attack, beating Tajpuria and firing at his group, beginning what would become a decade-long gang rivalry.<br>Moving up the criminal underworld ladder, Gogi went on to form the Jitender Gogi gang which became involved in extortion and land-grabbing around Delhi. <br>Tillu Tajpuriya founded the Tillu gang which since went to war with the Gogi gang. The feud between the Gogi gang and the rival Tillu gang has been bloody in the last decade. In the last six years, 10 members of the two gangs have been killed and others have survived assassination attempts. </p>

<p>Gogi was arrested over that attack in 2011, and since then appears to have turned to full time crime, according to police sources. The rivalry with Tillu took a violent turn in 2012, when Gogi and his associates allegedly shot at Vikas, a confidant of Tillu.<br>In 2015, Tillu was arrested by the Sonipat police, and has been behind bars.<br>Later, Gogi was also arrested by the Haryana CIA from Sonipat and handed over to the Delhi Police.<br>Gogi was arrested in 2016 after years spent terrorizing Delhi&#8217;s streets, but within three months was free again after breaking out from police custody.<br>According to police, desperate to kill Tillu, Gogi had escaped from police custody in 2016 when being taken to a Haryana court for a hearing.<br>He had killed several associates of Tillu before being re-arrested in 2020 in Gurgaon.</p>

<p>Authorities put a $5,400 [400,000 rupee], bounty on Gogi&#8217;s head, but it made little difference and he remained at large for years afterwards. <br>In 2017 he was accused of shooting dead folk singer Harshita Dahiya, who was a witness in a murder case against a Gogi gang member. <br>The following year he was back in the news again, accused of getting into a firefight with the Tillu gang on a Delhi street, leaving three people dead, including at least one gang member and an unconnected passerby. <br>Police eventually arrested Gogi in 2020, hiding in a safe-house in Gurugram on the outskirts of Delhi. <br>He was taken into custody alongside two men believed to be his closest lieutenants, Kuldeep Fazza and Rohit Moi. Police also recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition. <br>Fazza subsequently escaped from custody but was shot during a confrontation in March this year. Police rushed him to hospital but were attacked en route and forced to abandon him, leaving him to die.</p>

<p>Ever since, Gogi intensified his personal security blanket.<br>Footage from the courtroom people can be seen fleeing as gunshots ring out causing a melee. <br>With most proceedings held virtually because of coronavirus restrictions, very few people were present in the courtroom at the time of the shooting, said Satyanarayan Sharma, an attorney who was at the courthouse as part of a different case. Still, Sharma criticized a security lapse and demanded a thorough investigation. <br>The gunmen were members of a gang led by jailed gangster Tillu Tajpuriya, according to local media. <br>It comes months after one of Gogi&#8217;s associates Fajja escaped from police custody when he arrived in a courtroom. <br>Gogi has since been accompanied by Counter Intelligence forces during their hearings but they were unable to ward off today&#8217;s attack. <br>Police said Gogi and his rival Tillu have been running extortion rackets for years and their respective gangs have constantly been engaged in turf war. A police sources said Gogi and Tillu have known each other from their student days at Delhi University where they often clashed over politics. <br>In the last six years, 10 members of the two gangs have been killed and others have survived assassination attempts. <br></p>
