An Indiana man virtually guaranteed spending the rest of his behind bars after accidentally recording the murder of his mother’s boyfriend in a voicemail three years ago.
Cody Allen Wade, 33, of Clay County, was handed a sentence of 85 years – at least 75 of those years consecutive – in prison on Wednesday September 6.
In August he was convicted in June 18, 2020 fatal stabbing of 53-year-old Carl Haviland in Brazil, Indiana.
Wade had left a voicemail on his mother’s phone in the seconds before he stabbed Haviland four times, but failed to hang up before carrying out the attack.

His mother was also present to witness her son kill her boyfriend.
“The defendant repeatedly stabbed Carl Haviland not only in front of the defendant’s own mother but did so in spite of her efforts to physically prevent him from committing the crime,” the judge wrote in a sentencing order obtained by People.
After stabbing Haviland, Wade kicked and taunted his victim.
The killer plotted his crime beforehand, prosecutors said.
Wade left a cookout and headed to his mom’s house in Brazil, a city 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis, stopping along the way at another man’s house to tell him he was about to kill someone, the documents state.
At the time, he was on parole for arson. He had been released from jail in March 2020, just two months before the murder.
He was sentenced to 60 years for the murder with an additional 15 years added since he was found to be a habitual offender

Wade also received an additional ten years for two separate counts of felony battery on a public safety official with injury and five years, and was given concurrent sentences for three other charges: felony battery against a public safety official and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement. 
Wade who was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder will receive credit for the days he’s already served in jail.

Wade’s sentence lists as follows:
60 years for the murder charge
5 years for a level 5 felony charge of battery on a law enforcement officer with injury
5 years for a second level 5 felony charge of battery on a law enforcement officer with injury
2.5 years for a level 6 felony charge of battery on a public safety official
1 year for a class A misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement
15 years added on as Wade was found to be a habitual offender
