    A newlywed couple shot dead in a Wisconsin sports bar on the first day of the month, were killed over less than $150, police revealed.

    Ex-con Thomas Routt Jr. has been charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide after he admitted to investigators that he fired his gun at the bar with plans to rob the business. 
    Police said he snatched around $120 to $140 from the cash drawer before jumping into his vehicle and fleeing back to his home. 
    Gina worked two nights a week as a bartender there and her husband regularly kept her company late at night. 
    Witnesses recount seeing Routt, 57, inside the bar playing video games for around 30 minutes before he ‘brandished a handgun and pointed it at Gina, the bartender,’ police said. 

      Armed robbery and double-homicide suspect Thomas Routt Jr., [photo], 57, was arrested and charged in connection to the couple’s brutal murder. He got away with around $120 to $140 from the cash drawer before he fled. He was on parole for arson at the time of his arrest on Feb 4  

      ‘The eyewitness said they instinctively got up off their barstools and Routt pointed the gun at the eyewitness and ordered the eyewitness not to move,’ police said. 
      According to the report, Routt then allegedly fired his gun as the eyewitness quickly ran out of the establishment and called 911. 
      Routt was on parole for arson at the time of the alleged murders. He was arrested on February 4, by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office on a Department of Corrections hold.
      He is now set to face ad additional charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide of a third person, by use of a dangerous weapon, armed robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to a press release. 
      The morning after his arrest Routt told his police interviewers that he discarded the gun and ammunition in a trash can at a gas station in Lake Como.
      Investigators later recovered a 9mm handgun from that trash can.

      The couple grew up in Wisconsin and tied the knot in June 2023, only months before their seemingly senseless double murder.
      Police have yet to confirm whether the couple was targeted or they died in a random attack. 
      At the time of the incident, a heartbroken Jeff Weingart, said that cops ‘better find’ the suspect who shot dead his son and his newly wed bride.
      Weingert Sr speaking with WISN, described hearing that his son had died in such a horrific way as ‘gut-wrenching.’  
      ‘Somebody saw them’.
      ‘Somebody saw them. I don’t care, you don’t pull something like that off. I can’t believe that it was just her and him in the bar.’

      Elkhorn police were called around 12.11am for ‘shots fired’ in Sports Page Barr [photo], but responding officers on arrival, found the couple had dead from their injuries 

      Emerson was a Christian and ‘avid sportsman’ who grew up in Burlington, worked at Kroger as the Meat Department Manager at Metro Market in Mukwonago.
      Milwaukee native Gina, was described as ‘a very social person who loved people’. She also had a ‘great’ singing voice and had been selected for a cruise ship dance group. 
      ‘When she walked into a room, by the end of the day, she would know everyone. She had a beautiful smile that would light up a room,’ their obituary reads. 
      ‘Gina and Emerson starting dating in 2020 and became inseparable,’ the tribute adds. ‘(They were) two of the most beautiful, kindhearted and fun-loving couple you could ever know.’

      Routt appeared in court on Friday as Emerson’s father called the suspect a monster
      The suspect spoke just one time when he responded to the judge when asked about his attorney, while a public defender handled the rest of the hearing. 
      His attorney Russell Jones revealed that his client will be pleading not guilty and that neither he or his client have seen evidence yet. 
      ‘It’s their summary of the case, it’s not subject to cross-examination, it’s not evidence,’ Russell said. 

      The bar has remained closed as police taped off the area as they continue to search for evidence.the Sports Page Barr remains closed, but a memorial for the slain couple continues to grow outside the bar

      The alleged killer who previously spent more than 20 years in prison for arson and burglary convictions was paroled in 2020. He will remain in jail after his bond was set at $2 million on Friday..  
      Rout Jr is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday for charged related to the couple’s murder. 
      A GoFundMe memorial page created in honor of the well-liked couple with the funds set to be given to their families to help with funeral arrangement costs, has raised $13,035, surpassing the $10,000 goal.
