Carly Madison Gregg, 14, was arrested on Tuesday and charged as an adult with the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her father inside their home in Mississippi

A Mississippi teenager has been arrested after she allegedly shot dead her mother and wounded her stepfather before he wrestled the gun away and she fled.
Heath Smylie, 38, arrived at his home on Ashton Way near Jackson, Mississippi, around 5pm Tuesday to find his wife Ashley Smylie, 40, dead and his 14-year-old stepdaughter Carly Madison Gregg holding a handgun.
Carly Gregg allegedly shot her stepfather in the shoulder, but he was able to overpower her and grab the gun.
The teen fled, vaulting over a backyard fence. Police launched a manhunt that included air surveillance. Video recorded half an hour later, showed the suspect being led to a police cruiser in handcuffs.

Gregg was charged as an adult with murdering her mother and the attempted murder of Heath Smylie, Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said

Beloved teacher Ashley Smylie taught math at Northwest Rankin High School, where she was named new teacher of the year in 2022. Her her daughter and alleged killer, was also a student at Ranking High. Smylie previously taught at Warren Central High School, for five years
Police have not released the motive that propelled the teen to kill her mom.  
A student’s sister wrote on social media that ‘everyone loved her.’ 

Carly Madison Gregg arrested after she was accused of shooting both of her parents

Gregg was charged as an adult with murdering her mother and the attempted murder of Heath Smylie, Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said.
Friends posted tributes to Ashley Smylie online and vented their grief at her daughter’s alleged actions.
‘You probably won’t see this, I don’t care if you do, but really you coulda reached out to [somebody] other than take the life of an amazing WOMAN,’ one commented on Gregg’s social media page.

When she was disarmed by her dad, Carly Gregg vaulted over the backyard fence of their Mississippi home and fled. She was arrested after police hunted her down in a helicopter. Appearing briefly at Rankin County Court Wednesday morning, she was charged as an adult

‘We can’t do nothing now but grieve because of the mistake YOU made, you didn’t need to take someone’s life to get away from the problems you had. 
‘Because now you have made an even bigger problem with yourself and others, did you feel proud?
‘Did your heart sink deeper into your chest when you pulled the trigger? Do you feel what WE FEEL NOW? 
‘I pray for you, and may God bless you but what you have done will stick with everyone forever.’
Less than four weeks before the shooting, Gregg posted a series of photos of the family’s two dogs and three cats, writing ‘I love my animals’.

Deputies respond after local high school teacher Ashley Smylie was found dead from a gunshot wound at her home on Ashton Way near Jackson, Mississippi, on Tuesday afternoon

The teenager was taken to Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center but moved to the adult jail on Wednesday.
Gregg briefly appeared at Rankin County Court before Judge Kent McDaniel Wednesday morning where she pled not guilty and was given a $1 million bond.
Her body was taken to State Medical Examiner for an autopsy by Rankin County Coroner David Ruth to investigate her death.
