Three Ohio teens charged after turning themselves in, admitting to running over and killing teacher, Alexa Stakely, during carjacking as she picked up her son from babysitter

A teenage car thief turned himself in to police in Columbus Ohio on Wednesday after admitting to his parents that he and two others attempted to steal an Ohio teacher’s car, only to run her over with fatal consequences, in their bid to escape. 
Pre-school teacher Alexa Stakely, 29, was struck by the unidentified teenage carjacker on July 11, after he panicked when she confronted the group in order to save her child in the backseat during the middle of the robbery, Columbus Police said. 


Now, the that carjacker who ran over Starkey while attempting to flee with her stolen vehicle, identified as a 16-year-old boy, has turned himself in.
He was accompanied to police headquarters by his parents, after he told them he participated in the crime. 
‘It’s my understanding that his parents and his conscience got to him a little bit,’ Sergeant Joe Albert told WBNS.
‘We want to thank his parents…His parents immediately brought him down here to Columbus Police headquarters.’ 
Albert said the teen admitted to hitting Stakely after she ‘startled him and he panicked and drove away and struck Stakely, which caused her death.’
The teen who was driving the stolen Honda during the fatal hit, a second 16-year-old, alongside the oldest of the trio, 19-year-old Gerald Dowling, have all been charged with murder.

A $10million bond was set for Dowling by a Franklin County judge Thursday morning. He had turned himself in to Columbus Police on Wednesday and admitted to his involvement in the tragedy. 
It was reported that both minors suspects, are enrolled in the Canal Winchester Local Schools District – the same district Stakely taught as a speech pathologist. 
Stakely was fatally struck around 1am as she exited her babysitter’s apartment complex after noticing the the thief had started to back out of the space. She screamed for him to stop, letting him know her son was in the vehicle. 

The killer driver, alongside another 16-year-old and Gerald Dowling, 19, [photo], have been charged with murder. Dowling was arrested after he turned himself into Columbus Police on Wednesday and admitted to his involvement. His bond is set at $10million

The 16-year-old car thief, who is not identified being a minor, said he and his friends had been scoping out a car to steal when they spotted Stakely’s Honda. 
Canal Winchester Schools posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook to Stakely, a speech-language therapist who worked with the preschoolers at Winchester Trail Elementary, had left her six-year-old son to go get his belongings.
Seeing the thief jump into her SUV and driving off, she got in front of the vehicle in an attempt to save her son when the thief ran into her than stop. The vehicle struck Stakely and knocked her to the pavement, causing a head injury. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. 
The boys later ditched her Honda CRV a short distance away. Surveillance video released by Columbus police shows two of the three suspects running behind Stakely’s SUV just after it was stolen.
Police say the other two members of the the robbery gang met up with the driver once the car was abandoned and the trio continued their flight northbound.
Responding police officers found Stakely’s six-year-old son unharmed inside the abandoned Honda.

After the boy who drove the stolen Honda turned himself in, later Wednesday evening, police identified and interviewed a second 16-year-old who allegedly also admitted to being present during the incident.
Less than two hours later, Columbus police confirmed that the third suspect, Gerald Dowling, came to Columbus Police Headquarters and similarly admitted his involvement in the heist.
Dowling appeared separately in a Franklin County municipal Court on Thursday afternoon. He is being held in custody after the judge set his bond at $10 million bond with a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 2.
The pair of 16-year-old suspects who are being held in a juvenile detention facility, are expected to appear in juvenile court on Monday. Prosecutors are seeking to try them as adults.
