New Mexico teacher arrested for husband’s murder, five years after she ‘found him stabbed to death inside their home’

A New Mexico teacher who five years ago claimed she found her husband of a year dead inside their home two months after their wedding, has been charged with his murder.
The the Farmingdale Police Department arrested Heather Fernandez-Hoefer was arrested April 1, for killing her husband Robert Sean Hoefer, 49, in November 2020.
The 51-year-old mother and grandmother who teaches third grade at McCormick Elementary School has been charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
The police report states that on November 29, 2020, Fernandez-Hoefer called 911 in a panic, claiming she found her husband stabbed to death in their home.

Responding police officers arrived to at the Ivy City house and found Robert Hoefer bloodied and deceased with three apparent stab wounds in his chest.
Investigators saw red flags when Fernandez-Hoefer allegedly, started telling them several conflicting versions in both the timeline and manner of her husband’s death.
The affidavit flagged her ‘inconsistent and unlikely statements are signs of deception.’
Investigators also noted with every account she maintained that it was a suicide. Heather said Robert stabbed himself while he was alone in their computer room.

On discovering his injuries, she helped clean his chest before they went to sleep in different rooms.
Later on, she found her husband face-down on the floor of their bedroom, Fernandez-Hoefer alleged.
This narrative is contradicted by crime scene evidence police said.
Most of the blood from the death was on the couple’s bed, not on the floor, according to the affidavit.
Furthermore, Hoefer’s the three stab wounds to Hoefer’s chest were so deep that they punctured his lungs and sliced his coronary artery.
Those severe injuries would have killed him in just minutes.
Text messages between the husband and wife revealed they were arguing about money and Hoefer’s prior relationship before he died.

A neighbor also told police he heard them screaming at each other the night of the incident.
Based on what the ongoing investigation has revealed so far, Fernandez-Hoefer was taken into custody at the Juan County Adult Detention Center.
But she was bailed out of jail a day later on April 2.
Following her arrest, the school district confirmed that she was put on administrative leave.
