The confession was signed on July 1, a day before the Boise court hearing where he admitted to the murders.
Kohberger, at the time a doctorate student at Washington State University 10 miles away, with no apparent connection to the victims, accepted guilt, but added nothing else.

Kohberger will spend the remainder of his natural life behind bars as per his plea arrengement.
He is expected to receive four consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus another 10 years.
However, this plea spared him having to facing a lengthy trial that could have revealed his actual motives. It also spared him having to face possible execution by firing squad.

Expressing their consternation at the verdict, several members of some victims’ families who condemned the deal, urged the prosecution to insist that Kohberger goes to trial with the potential of his facing capital punishment.
