Driver of SUV in Christmas crash that injured ex-heavyweight champ, Anthony Joshua, killing his trainer and fitness coach, arraigned for ‘reckless driving, causing death’

Kayode was the driver in a deadly car crash that injured former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s friends
The accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was reportedly caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtakingÂ
Kayode was arraigned on Tuesday on four counts, including dangerous driving causing death and driving without a valid national driver’s license
The court granted Kayode bail with bond set at ₦5 million, [$3,480], while the case was adjourned to February 25

The driver in a deadly car crash that injured British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and killed his two friends in Nigeria was arraigned on Tuesday on four counts, including dangerous driving causing death and driving without a valid national driver’s license.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared at a local court in Ogun state in Nigeria’s southwest, following the accident in December that occurred near Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos.
The accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was reportedly caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtakingÂ
Kayode was driving Joshua and his friends in a Lexus SUV when it hit a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which links Ogun state to Lagos. Joshua, who was born in Watford, UK, has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun state
He was on his way to visit relatives for New Year celebrations in the town at the time when the crash happened near the town.
Joshua, 36, survived, but his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, was killed along with the boxer’s strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami. Both men died at the age of 36.Â

Officials later said they found the driver to be driving at high speed.
The defendant was first charged early January for dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid national driver’s license. He was at the time granted bail of ₦5 million [$3,480].
The defendant arrived at the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun on Tuesday morning wearing a black hoodie and black trousers and in the company of his lawyers. However, the court adjourned trial until February 25, following a request by the prosecution.
Joshua like his two friends have family roots in Nigeria. Joshua he briefly attended boarding school there as a child, also holds Nigerian nationality.
