<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Chinese researcher at the University of Michigan took his own life after being subjected to &#8216;hostile questioning&#8217; by federal agents, it is claimed. <br>Danhao Wang, a postdoctoral research scientist in the school&#8217;s College of Engineering, died on March 20 inside the university after falling to his death. <br>Police said they are investigating his death as a &#8216;possible act of self-harm&#8217;, with the China Ministry of Foreign Affairs claiming he took his life after &#8216;hostile questioning&#8217;. <br>The statement from the nation&#8217;s Foreign Affairs Ministry, which did not name Wang, said that the postdoctoral student took his life &#8216;after being subjected to hostile questioning by U.S. law enforcement&#8217;.<br>It added: &#8216;[This] calls into question once again the impact and legitimacy of unwarranted U.S. interrogation and harassment targeting Chinese researchers and students.&#8217;<br>The statement also called on the US to carry out a &#8216;full investigation&#8217; and to give Chinese authorities and Wang&#8217;s family a &#8216;responsible explanation&#8217;. </p>

That person was later pronounced dead. <br>Karen Thole, College of Engineering Dean later in an email to the whole college, <a href="https://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/2026/04/union-warns-against-talking-to-feds-after-university-of-michigan-researchers-death.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MLive</a> reports, identified the &#8216;individual&#8217; as Dr. Danhao Wang, a post doctorate researcher with the college.<br>Thole in her message said: &#8216;Dr. Wang was a promising and brilliant young mind, whose research into wide bandgap III-nitride semiconductor materials and devices published in Nature stands as a landmark, uncovering for the first time the switching and charge compensation mechanisms of emerging ferroelectric nitrides.<br>&#8216;His loss is felt deeply not only by those who knew him here at the University, but also everyone who understands his potential to have contributed to breakthroughs in science that would have positively impacted people around the world.<br>&#8216;This is an active police investigation and we have no further information to share regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The questioning comes in a time of increased scrutiny towards Chinese international students and scholar from China, increasingly targeted by the federal government over alleged national security concerns. <br>The scrutiny has been criticized as xenophobic, selectively highlighting the actions of a few individuals to cast all Chinese nationals in a suspicious light.<br>The University itself has come under fire from the administration several times, including at least three Chinese nationals with ties to the university who were <a href="https://michiganadvance.com/2025/06/10/chinese-national-with-university-of-michigan-ties-charged-for-smuggling-bio-material-into-u-s/">charged</a> by the FBI with attempting to smuggle biological material into the US in 2024 and 2025.</p>
