One man is dead Saturday morning after an accidental shooting incident on the 13700 block of Montfort Drive in Dallas, according to police.
The Dallas Police Department was called to Montfort Drive after reports of a shooting the morning of June 11 at 7:31 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the body of Ivan Robert-Earnest Cole.
The 25-year-old MMA fighter died early Saturday after shooting himself during a game of Russian roulette at a Far North Dallas apartment.
Dallas police confirmed that Ivan “J.P.” Cole was shot about 7:30 a.m. in the 13700 block of Montfort Drive, but did not say whether he shot himself or someone shot him.
KTVT reporter J.D. Miles tweeted that Cole died while playing Russian roulette.
Cole is survived by his wife. The couple celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary on Friday.
“You still give me butterflies,” his wife posted on Facebook a day before Cole’s death.
Cole wasn’t well-known in the mixed martial arts world, and he had won only two of five professional fights in the past four years, according to multiple MMA websites. He had also worked as an MMA instructor in the Dallas area.
Last September, the Texas Combative Sports Advisory Board ordered the 135-pound athlete to pay $5,000 and suspended his license for a year for unsportsmanlike conduct, records show.
