Judge Megan Shanahan sitting at the Ohio Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, Monday ordered the death sentence for Glen Bates, the father of a two-year-old girl who was starved and badly beaten, leading to her death.
Judge Shanahan followed the jury’s recommendation that 34-year-old Glen Bates should be executed for aggravated murder. While Bates’ attorney said he wants to appeal the sentence, the defendant elected not to speak at the sentencing hearing.

A Cincinnati jury had convicted Bates on multiple charges in the death of his two-year-old daughter, Glenara.  Bate’s attorneys presenting a case for mitigation, had pushed for a life sentence instead of the death penalty, arguing that such a sentence would force him to think about what happened every day.
Bates who reportedly turned down a plea deal that would have spared his life, declined to comment as he was sentenced on Monday. He was also sentenced to 15 years and eight years in prison on two lesser charges.
‘This man is a murderer who needs to pay for what he did to this innocent baby. My heart breaks for this little girl. She died in one of the most horrific ways imaginable,’ Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters said.

Glenara’s mother, Angela Bradley, 30, has pled not guilty in the case. Her case is being handled separately and returns to court on Tuesday. She also faces a possible death sentence in Glenara’s slaying.
Authorities said her other six children are in the custody of relatives or family services.
