An airline passenger at JFK Airport stole $5,600 in cash and yen belonging to a fellow flier on a screening line, then tried to stash some of the money in a Cheerios box, Port Authority police said, Monday.
Cops at JFK pulled Nadira Malilk, 61, a Bangladeshi national, off her Aim Emirates flight before it took off Sunday morning, accusing her of stealing the money from a security bin.
According to said Port Authority police spokesman Joseph Pentangelo, the 60-year-old victim who was visiting from China placed the cash,  $4,300 in U.S. dollars and $1,300 in yen, in a bin and walked through the screening checkpoint at 10:20 a.m. When the man turned around to retrieve his money, it was gone.
Police review of security footage showed Malilk reach into the bin.
She was observed hiding the dollars in a Cheerios box in her carry-on bag and slipping the yen in a zipper compartment in that same carry-on, Pentangelo said. When she was accosted “She asked if she could just simply give the money back,” he added.
Officers arrested Malilk and returned the victim’s money. She was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
She will be arraigned in Queens criminal court Monday.
