Former Flamengo FC goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes de Souza, masterminded the plot to kill the mother of his child Eliza Samudio in 2010
de Souza, 32, was convicted of kidnapping and sentenced to 22 years and three months for the murder and the disposal of the body
But after serving less than a third of his 22-year sentence, Bruno has been snapped up by Brazillian team Boa Esporte
He admitted his involvement in the evil plot, in which his hirelings tortured and strangled the model before feeding her body to his rottweilers

To avoid handing over cash to support their four-month-old son, the callous da Souza arranged for her murder, the court heard.
Eliza Samudio was lured to  de Souza’s house before being strapped to a chair and beaten for six days by Bruno’s associates. Bruno reportedly watched as former cop Marcos Santos brutally tortured Eliza before strangling her with a tie in front of her son.

In a statement to police, the footballer’s teenage cousin Jorge Rosa claimed he and Romao picked up Ms Samudio and her son from a Rio de Janeiro hotel after she accepted an invitation by the footballer to talk about the paternity claims.
He said they drove her 220 miles to a property in Belo Horizonte which Bruno and his wife used as a weekend retreat, where she was held captive for six days.
Ms Samudio was then allegedly handed over to former military policeman Santos, who committed ‘barbaric tortures’ on her before strangling her to death with a neck tie in front of her four-month-old son.

Santos, who was allegedly paid £8,000 to murder her, played loud music on a stereo to drown out the woman’s screams, it is claimed.

Edson Moreira, a detective who investigated the case, said: ‘His acts were almost impossible to describe without breaking down – images from the worst nightmare you could imagine.’
Police later found Ms Samudio’s four-month-old baby in a Belo Horizonte slum, alleged to have been abandoned there by Bruno’s wife Dayane. DNA tests later proved the footballer’s paternity. The child is now being looked after by Ms Samudio’s mother.

Bruno’s lawyers obtained his release on a habeas corpus after the slow-moving Brazilian courts failed to act on his appeal. Video footage allegedly captured Bruno celebrating his freedom by drinking champagne with friends.
The signing struck a nerve with Brazilian fans and women’s rights groups, who viewed the leniency offered a soccer star as a disturbing sign of the country’s misogynistic culture.
“We protest both against this contract and against the willingness of the team and its sponsors to have their images linked to feminicide,” one Brazilian group, the Popular Feminist Front of Varghina, wrote in a statement on Facebook. “A woman-killer must not be allowed a life acclaimed by the media. Bruno is no longer just a goalkeeper; his notoriety reflects the ease with which a woman’s life is forgotten in the interests of a sporting career.”

Three sponsors reportedly pulled their support of Boa Esporte after the announcement was made.
Ironically, Brazilian team Cruzeiro had its players wear specially designed shirts for last Wednesday’s Brazilian Cup game in an effort to raise awareness of the injustices facing women on International Women’s Day. Some read “A rape every 11 minutes” and others “Salaries 30% lower.”

Significatly, Boa Esporte’s decision to sign the goalie for two years has been met with a backlash, as three important sponsors cut ties with the club.
The club’s president, Rone Moraes da Costa, was forced to release a statement and said that Boa Esporte were doing a positive thing by trying to restore a person into society by giving him work.
He said the club “was not responsible for the release and freedom of the athlete, Bruno, but the club and the team, as a company, represented by human beings, endowed with justice and legality, can say that they tried to do justice by helping a human being”.
Bruno was due to start training with his new teammates today with a view to playing a match within the next two months.
