Police are trying to find what made a beer-swilling gunman shoot seven people, one fatally, at a California apartment complex pool party.
Peter Selis, 49, a white man, targeted African-American or Hispanic victims during Sunday evening’s rampage, according to witnesses.
A black woman died. Police shot the gunman dead at the upmarket condominium in San Diego.
It is unknown if the incident was a hate crime.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting about 18:00 local time at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments.

One witness told NBC 7 When Selis walked up to the pool party, he was approached and invited to join the celebrations by the person who was celebrating their 50th birthday at the bash: “When he invited the suspect to join the celebration, the suspect lifted up his shirt, took out the gun and shot him in the stomach.”
The witness tells NBC 7: “He continued shooting people until he was out of bullets.”
Another witness added that Selis appeared to be drinking a beer during the gunfire.
“He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other,” the witness told the network.
“There were two victims lying on the ground, one trying to crawl toward the other one to help.”
Another witness said Selis sat in a lawn chair during the incident, and was telling people to leave and save themselves or die: “You can either leave or you can stay here and die,” Peter told a group of young women who were helping a wounded friend, according to witnesses.

It is not yet known if Selis knew any of the roughly 30 people at the party.
Seven people, all adults, were hit by gunfire: four black women, two black men and a Latino man. one of the woman later died at the hospital. A man broke his arm while fleeing the shooting, Zimmerman said.
It was unclear what motivated the shooting and police were still interviewing witnesses, including the responding officers.
Three officers shot Selis after he pointed his gun at them. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zimmerman said the gunman and at least one of the partygoers lived at the apartment complex, where monthly rent ranges between $1,750 and $4,000.
Selis who filed for bankruptcy in 2015, lists his occupation as a car mechanic for a San Diego based Ford dealership, in court documents. He is also listed as having three children a 12-year-old daughter, a son, 16, and a stepson, 19.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulcone condemned the “horrific and disturbing act” in a tweet on Monday morning.
