Fox News has retracted a story it published on May 16 alleging that an FBI forensics examination showed that Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich leaked work emails to WikiLeaks before he was fatally shot.
D.C. police have said they think Rich was killed in a random robbery attempt, but conspiracy theories have emerged about his death.
Federal and local law enforcement authorities say they have found no evidence that Rich sent any DNC information to WikiLeaks.
DNC staffer Seth Conrad Rich shot and killed in apparent ‘robbery’: shot several times but nothing was taken
Fox host Sean Hannity, insists he has ‘nothing’ to retract
On Tuesday, Fox News removed the article and released the following statement:
“On May 16, a story was posted on the Fox News website on the investigation into the 2016 murder of DNC Staffer Seth Rich. The article was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting. Upon appropriate review, the article was found not to meet those standards and has since been removed.
“We will continue to investigate this story and will provide updates as warranted.”
The retraction comes a week after the Fox News Channel finally retracted the news story pushed hard on the network by talk show host Sean Hannity about a conspiracy theory regarding the murder last year of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.
Seth Rich was shot to death in Washington, D.C., and the official police conclusion of the investigation was that Seth was the victim of a robbery gone wrong.
However, Sean Hannity and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich have pushed as fact, an apparently single-sourced story that the young DNC staffer provided WikiLeaks with thousands of internal DNC emails and was killed in retribution.
Fox News local DC affiliate went further to imply that ‘Rich was rubbed out for betraying the Democrats’.
Fox host Hannity, who remained unapologetic Tuesday, saying he personally retracted “nothing,” shot off a string of tweets last weekend supporting the story. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich gave the story more propulsion when he took to the Sunday morning talk shows to push what has to be an unfounded piece of news on a Sunday morning public affairs program.
