<p>A Staten Island judge sentenced a killer baby-sitter to life in prison Tuesday, citing her torture and murder of a 17-month-old boy as the most heinous case of his career.<br />
Judge Wayne Ozzie imposed the term of 23 years to life after watching confessed child killer Gloria Fields stare blankly as the slain child’s uncle choked back tears while addressing the court.<br />
“I saw no emotion, no visible remorse,” said Ozzie. “It confirms my belief that you are depraved in some way. Why would anyone want to do this to a 17-month-old child?<br />
“What were you thinking? That poor child never had a chance,” he continued, ripping into Fields as “wicked and cruel.”</p>

<p>Fields, 32, admitted to the murder of helpless Anthony Delgado between Feb. 19-21, 2016, confessing that she systematically tormented and killed the toddler.<br />
Relatives of the slain little boy applauded in the courtroom when the sentence was imposed.<br />
“This defendant deserves to spend the rest of her life in prison for the atrocious and sickening crimes she committed,” said Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon.<br />
The battered little boy suffered multiple skull fractures, a fractured clavicle, perforated intestines and internal bleeding during the course of Fields’ relentless abuse.<br />
Authorities charged she inserted a pencil into the child’s rectum and slammed his head into the ground when the child was strapped into a stroller.<br />
His mother Marta Delgado, 23, wrote a heart-breaking victim impact statement read in court by her brother Eddie.</p>

<p>“As a mother, I never thought there would be a day that I would be on this earth without my son,” her statement said. “I often thought about taking him to his first day at school &#8230; and teaching him how to ride his bike.<br />
“It was sobering when I realized I would never be able to have these opportunities. I would never get to see his smiling face. I would never be able to buy him another bag of Cheese Doodles, his favorite food.”<br />
Eddie Delgado choked back tears as he reached the conclusion of the statement: “The defendant committed so many unforgivable crimes, crimes I’m not sure could ever be</p>

<p>Authorities said the child’s feet were the only part of his body left uninjured during the brutal beating.<br />
A strung out Fields confessed to the crimes after her arrest two years ago, while she was still high, according to officials. She took a plea deal in the case.<br />
The boy’s mother left Fields in charge of her son when she headed out to handle arrangements for their move into a new apartment.<br />
Fields, who had nine previous arrests on her rap sheet, initially tried to skip out on the sentencing by complaining about the media presence in the courtroom.<br />
The judge asked the photographers at the sentencing not to photograph the murderer.</p>
