An Illinois mother has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for beating her one-year-old son to death with a belt and coat hangers, and throwing his body into a river before faking a kidnapping.
Lakeshia Baker, 27, was sentenced after pleading guilty to murder on Thursday in connection to the April 2013 slaying of Bryeon Hunter, Chicago Tribune.
Prosecutors alleged that Baker and her then-boyfriend, Michael Scott, beat the little boy with a belt and plastic hangers, leaving him to die on the bathroom floor inside their Maywood, Illinois, home on April 15, 2013.
Now aged 26, Scott was similarly charged with murder after prosecutors
When they realized the child had died, they took the body to the river and faked a kidnapping to cover it up, prosecutors said.

The toddler’s decomposed body was fished out of the Des Plaines river in Illinois in May 2013, a month after he was beaten to death .

Scott it is alleged,  covered the child’s mouth so that his grandmother would not hear the baby scream or cry.
When the couple realized Bryeon was dead, they stuffed his body into a backpack, drove to the Des Plaines river and threw it in the water.
Baker then went to the police, claiming that her son had been abducted. She even made her four-year-old son practice their cover-up story over and over in case he was questioned.
Baker claimed Bryeon was snatched from her on their way to a McDonald’s, telling reporters that she and her son were attacked and beaten by three Hispanic men.Michael Smith, Lakeshia Baker's boyfriend 1.PNG

‘They pulled up out of the alleyway and told me, ‘Didn’t we say we didn’t want to see you here no more?’ They pulled down my hair and pulled me in the car and started beating me and all I heard was my baby just screaming,’ Baker told the local TV station at the time.
She even appeared in news reports with a swollen eye.
The report of the kidnapping prompted an Amber Alert and set off a search of abandoned buildings, trash bins and industrial areas by authorities and volunteers.
Canine units were brought in, and a search of the Des Plaines River was carried out with divers and sonar equipment.
Under questioning, Baker ultimately admitted that the kidnapping story was a lie and that she and Scott had beaten her son so severely that he died.
A month after the child’s killing, a kayaker found Bryeon’s heavily decomposed body in the Des Plaines river near Brookfield Zoo in North Riverside. It took officials months to positively identify him.
Scott’s criminal case is still making its way through the court system.
