A sheriff’s deputy in Texas sexually assaulted a 4-year-old girl and threatened the child’s mother with deportation if she talked, according to authorities..
Jose Nunez, 47, a detention deputy who’s been with the department ten years was was busted Sunday for super aggravated sexual assault, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
The abuse had allegedly been going on for months, and Salazar said investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the little girl had been molested for years.
“The details of the case are quite frankly heartbreaking, disturbing, disgusting and infuriating all at the same time, to be honest with you,” Salazar said during a press conference on Sunday.
The little girl reported the sexual assault to her mother, who is an undocumented immigrant. Nunez a detention officer, who has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 years, allegedly tried to intimidate the family.
“This suspect utilized that to his advantage to place the mother in fear that she would be deported if she did report it,” Salazar said.
Police chief Salazar says the victim, who is 4, cried out to her mother Saturday night.
He said the mother decided to go to a local fire station to report the abuse.
Investigators quickly stepped in and arrested Nunez, around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Salazar said Nunez touched the girl’s genitals and hurt her.
Investigators believe the abuse could go back months or possibly years: “When one person or persons individually demonstrate like they did in this case that they’re not worthy to be part of this agency, then we’re going to, quite frankly, get them out of here. Cut them out like cancer. And that’s what’s going to happen in this case,” said Salazar.
Salazar said he encourages undocumented immigrants to continue to report crimes. He said there could be more victims in Nunez’s case.
Chief Salazar said during the press conference that Nunez will be placed on paid administrative leave for 10 days, but will then be placed on unpaid leave. Internal affairs will also be conducting a separate, but concurrent, police sources said.
“To be honest my objective is to separate this person from the agency as soon as possible,” he said. “When one person or persons demonstrate that they are not worthy to be part of this agency, then we are, quite frankly, going to get them out of here, cut them out like a cancer. That’s what’s going to happen in this case.”
Nunez is facing a charge of “super” aggravated sexual assault because of the young age of the victim.
