According to TMZ, the 25-year-old singer contacted a drug dealer via text message in the early hours of July 24 to join her at her Hollywood Hills house, after she attended a party at popular Sunset Strip bar Saddle Ranch.
The website reports that the pair smoked painkiller Oxycodone ‘on tin foil’ at her home and, unbeknown to the star, the batch was likely laced with particularly potent fentanyl as the dealer had a ‘bad habit of buying [tainted] drugs from Mexico’.
The drug dealer, who Demi is said to have been using the services of since April, allegedly fled the star’s house after noticing that she was breathing heavily in bed — leaving her staff to discover her at 11:30 AM, reports TMZ.
She is said to have been revived with Narcan before being rush to hospital, where she remained for two weeks as she recovered.
Following music icon Prince’s death in April 2016, a toxicology report revealed that he had an ‘exceedingly high’ concentration of the synthetic opioid — which is 50 times more powerful than heroin — in his blood at the time of his passing.
And in November 2017, 21-year-old rapper Lil Peep — real name Gustav Elijah Åhr — died of an accidental overdose, due to the effects of pain medications fentanyl and alprazolam after taking cannabis, cocaine and the painkiller Tramadol.
Following her hospitalization and subsequent release, Demi cancelled her tour and entered a treatment centre in Chicago in a bid to seek further treatment.
Close sources have revealed that she ‘will be in rehab for several months and is doing an extensive program to ensure she gets the help she needs’, according to E News.
Even her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama will have limited contact, with the source explaining: ‘Wilmer has been in touch with the family and has been checking in on Demi’s status.
‘The family is trying to make sure they eliminate all distractions and want her to be focusing on her health right now.’
The pop star was forced to scrap her remaining shows in Mexico and South America as she will be ‘in treatment for a lengthy period of time’ according to TMZ.
Live Nation and Lotus Productions ‘wish Demi Lovato the best now and in the future and we hope to see her soon in South America’.
Demi left Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, TMZ reported, before taking a private plane to one of the nation’s leading addiction facilities, which is outside California.
It is unknown how long she will stay there, but is expected to remain under care for at least 30 days.

Sources close to Demi have told the site that Demi’s team held a meeting last week to discuss ‘separating her from toxic people in her life once she gets out of rehab’.
TMZ alleges that the list of ‘toxic’ people include a distant relative of Demi as well as ‘yes’ friends, drug users and anyone without the singer’s best interests at heart.
