Police responded to reports of gunshots at around 7pm on Monday entered a house in the 11200 block of Covello Street in the Sun Valley section of Los Angeles
Cops found a 39-year-old woman was found fatally shot multiple times inside her home
Her husband in his 60s suffered a single self-inflicted gunshot wound
The couple’s two-year-old daughter was found unharmed in her playpen
Neighbors say husband had recently lost his job and police had been called to the home for a domestic dispute five days earlier
LAPD detectives say it appeared the man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
The couple’s two-year-old daughter was discovered by responding officers unharmed in a bedroom.
‘She was in a safe playpen with toys,’ LAPD Lt. Mike Kodak told ABC Los Angeles station KABC. ‘She didn’t seem to know what was going on, obviously at that age.’
One of the uniformed officers on the scene was seen on video carrying the toddler out of the residence and comforting her outside. She was later taken to a police station.
The family’s next-door neighbor Jaime Vazquez told the Los Angeles Daily News that the husband and wife had lived in the area for more than 10 years.
According to the neighbor, the man had recently lost his job, and police had been called to the home for a domestic dispute involving yelling just five days before the murder-suicide.
Another neighbor said his father had encountered the husband the night before the deadly incident and urged him to seek counseling for his marriage problems.
