A Florida man who shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend, and then went on the run for a month before fatally wounding a police officer as she tried to arrest him was found guilty of the murders of his ex-girlfriend and her unborn baby on Wednesday.
Markeith Lloyd, 44, was convicted on Wednesday of murdering his ex, Sade Dixon, in December 2016.
During the trial, the jury heard that Dixon taunted Lloyd about their unborn baby, saying she would not allow him to see the child when born
He told a jury that he shot her in ‘self-defense’ after she allegedly reached for a gun during an argument over whether or not she should keep their baby.

He claimed he was trying to persuade her not to have an abortion when he shot her.

Lloyd then went on the run. In January 2017, the fugitive shot and killed police lieutenant Debra Clayton, outside a Walmart.
She recognized him and tried to arrest him but the pair exchanged gunfire and she was killed.
After shooting her, he went on the run again and was arrested shortly afterwards at a house where he’d been hiding.

They are asking for the death penalty in both cases.
During the trial, the jury heard that Dixon taunted Lloyd about their unborn baby, saying she would not allow him to see it when it was born.
His attorneys claimed he was upset with her for smoking marijuana and eating meat, despite being pregnant.
He said he did not approve of her eating meat because he does not believe ‘in death’ and thinks that we are all ‘God’s creatures’, he testified on Monday.
He also however testified that he is not into religion.
Lloyd insisted that his ex-girlfriend reached for a different gun and was going to kill him but that police stole it from the scene.

‘She pulled a gun on me. They done took the gun off the crime scene. They’ve got to be hiding a gun,’ he said.
He also revealed how the pair met on Facebook in 2014, after he got out of prison, and that he asked her what her credit score was when they started speaking.

He said it was because he wanted to raise a family.
Lloyd’s attorneys based their defense on the idea that he was a loving would-be parent and that he was desperately trying to get his ex to stop smoking marijuana.
However text messages between the pair indicated that he had also been unfaithful to her and that he had gone to strip clubs.
Lloyd is yet to be tried for the police officer’s murder.
Prosecutors are also asking for him to be sentenced to death in that case.
Clayton was praised as a hero when she confronted him outside Walmart after recognizing him.
That trial is not due to begin until next year.
