Mom-of-three accused of throwing two of own kids off bridge in Shreveport, Louisiana, killing one was arrested Friday afternoon near the Texas state line

A mother was being held on murder charges Saturday after police said she threw two of her children from a bridge in northwest Louisiana, killing one and seriously injuring the other.
The infant boy was found floating near the Cross Lake bridge in the city of Shreveport around 11 a.m. Friday and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The other victim was located moments later in the same lake and was brought to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
That second child, a 5-year-old boy, was treated and was reportedly expected to survive, officials said in an update late Friday.
Police say Shreveport resident and mother-of-three Ureka Black, 32, brought two her two young sons onto a large bridge, tossed them both over the edge, and sent them plummeting into a lake below .
Following an 11.00 am call to the Shreveport Police Department about a child seen floating in the lake near the Cross Lake bridge, marine patrol officers recovered an unresponsive infant. The infant was pulled from the water and pronounced dead.
The multi-agency search effort that went on for more than three hours. The officers continued searching the lake and were able to find and rescue the five-year-old boy who was reportedly brought to LSU Oschner Health Shreveport with “life-threatening injuries,” But, he is reportedly expected to make a full recovery.
Their mother was arrested Friday afternoon near the Texas state line, where she was caught driving a minivan with Texas license plates, Shreveport Police Sgt. Angie Wilhite said at a news briefing livestreamed by KSLA-TV.
The suspect, Ureka Black, was charged with one count of second-degree murder for the death of her infant son and one count of attempted second-degree murder for hospitalizing her five-year-old son.
Officers with the Waskom Police Department took her into custody at a rest area in Waskom, Texas early Friday afternoon. Black has since been charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
She was being held without bond at the Caddo Parish jail.
Authorities initially were concerned that Black’s third child was missing and may have been in the lake as well, but they were confirmed that child was at another location and had not been harmed.
“We do believe at this point that the children were thrown from a bridge,” Sgt. Wilhite told reporters without providing details or a possible motive.
“This is a tragedy and we ask for prayers for the family of these children and for our law enforcement officers who have been here all day, all morning working on this,” she said.
The investigation is ongoing.
