Obumseli’s family attorney Larry Handfield said that the recordings were ‘shocking,’ and that it shows ‘a consistent pattern with someone who is unhinged and out of control. She is the aggressor and abuser in this whole relationship’.
In another piece of evidence from the phone recordings, Clenney sternly asks her boyfriend if he is ‘done gaslighting me,’ to which he responds: ‘Courtney, that’s a f**king threat. I asked you something … and I apologized but you hit me.’

Her lawyers are trying to argue that she stabbed him in self-defense, and that a day earlier she was visibly shaken and fearful as she accused him of stalking her.
This comes as footage of the pair inside an elevator revealed Clenney throwing punches at her partner just two months before he was stabbed to death.
Clenney could be seen viciously slapping and pulling Obumseli’s hair as he desperately tried to fend off her blows. But her attorneys say that the harrowing clip lacks context, and her actions were in fact reactionary.
In the clips filmed on April 2, the couple were seen walking into the lobby of the luxury Miami high-rise where Clenney lived with Obumseli where a doorman tells them that there had been a domestic disturbance.

Seen her in a mugshot from her arrest, Clenney faces second-degree murder charges for fatally stabbing Obumseli, 27, in the chest while the two argued on April 3. She’s claiming that she is a victim of intimate partner violence and she acted in self-defense

A tearful and visibly upset Clenney is seen talking on her phone before asking the doorman to let her into the apartment after locking herself out.
She then explains that she broke up with Obumseli a week earlier, and her mother had come to stay with her to help her. She also claimed, however, that he had been sleeping in her ‘elevator room’ the entire time.
‘I broke up with him … he slept inside my elevator room on a couch, that’s stalking. He wouldn’t leave me alone,’ she told officers.
The scene in the bodycam footage is chaotic, with multiple people speaking over each other. At one point, Clenney, who is shaking, tries to get officers to listen to her.

It was the sad end of the young couple’s tumultuous relationship – just one day earlier, she had called police claiming he was trying to attack her.
The audio revealed how she begged paramedics to hurry to the apartment in Miami.
‘Please, my boyfriend is dying of a stab wound,’ she’s heard pleading on the phone.
She didn’t tell the operator that she had stabbed him, but sobbed to him about how sorry she was.
In the background, Obumseli can be heard crying out: ‘I can’t feel my arm.’
Clenney who is now in custody on charges of second degree murder, insists it was self-defense, that Obumseli regularly assaulted her.
Her attorney says the audio proves how distraught she was after stabbing him, and how determined she was to keep him alive.
‘This is not someone that stabbed somebody and didn’t care.
‘Obviously, you can hear from her emotions she’s asking for somebody to come quickly to help,’ her lawyer told The Miami Herald.

Obumseli’s family hear something different. They say it shows that she intended to kill him, then regretted it once the knife had been plunged into him.
‘It shows her state of mind. She’s saying she’s sorry because she’s realizing what she’s done. She’s not saying, “I was defending myself,”‘ his family’s attorney, Larry Hadfield said.
Police were called to the apartment complex on April 1.

Who’s the aggressor, as Courtney Clenney attacks Christian Obumseli in the elevator

The sensational murder case, featuring a white female social-media influencer killing her boyfriend, a young Black professional, has garnered international media attention.
The case is also a twist on the vast majority of domestic violence cases, with prosecutors casting Obumseli as the long-suffering male victim of Clenney, while her defense attorneys insist he was the aggressor and she stabbed him in self-defense.
Obumseli’s family have been angered by his killer not being charged immediately over his death, which they have attributed to ‘her ‘privilege’ as a ‘wealthy white woman,’ completely disbelieving her self-defense claim.
In a statement posted to Instagram, the victim’s brother, Jeffrey Obumseli on behalf of the family, said they do not believe Clenney and demand that she be charged with killing the son they called Toby.

Courtney Clenney is shown on April 3, after allegedly stabbing Obumseli on the balcony of their Miami home on April 13, her dog beside her. She is covered in blood, but not her own

Despite the video and shared photos of the handcuffed suspect covered with blood on her high-rise balcony just after the killing, days later she was released and shipped off to a rehab facility for PTSD, while the killing was treated as self-defense.
‘The bottom line is inextricably clear: Courtney is being treated differently because of her privilege as a wealthy White woman,’ Jeffrey Obumseli wrote on Instagram.
‘Within 24 hours following Toby’s death, the detective on the case prematurely concluded this was not a crime of violence.’
Throughout the investigation, Clenney was posting X-rated content on her OnlyFans page since allegedly killing her boyfriend.  X-rated content had appeared on her site a day after she killed Obumseli but it is unclear if it had been scheduled to go live before the incident.
However, within 24 hours of her arrest, Clenney’s OnlyFans page was taken down.
