McRae killed himself before police got to him, having murdered three MSU students in two different locations on campus last night and injured five others.
His father Michael, 66, described him today as a ‘mama’s boy’ who turned ‘evil and mean’ after his mother Linda died suddenly three years ago. The pair lived together in McRae’s family home, that is around five miles from the MSU campus.
McRae was found with a note in his pocket indicating a threat to two public schools in Ewing, New Jersey, which were closed for the day ‘out of an abundance of caution’.

The gunman was named by police as 43-year-old Anthony McRae. Records show a man with the same name who lives in Lansing who has a 2019 arrest for keeping a loaded gun in his car

Michael Dwayne McRae created chaos and tension on the MSU campus for nearly four hours, running through the streets, brandishing a gun, and firing at random targets. Security camera clips showed the gunman, wearing a jean-jacket, ball cap and red sneakers, wandering nonchalantly along a street after killing three students at two separate locations in the school.
Campus police report that McRae strode into an academic building named Berkey Hall at 8:18 pm, shooting indiscriminately at the occupants.
When law enforcement converged on the scene in response to a torrent of urgent 911 calls, the killer had already left the premises, heading west out of the building prowling campus roads as he hunted for his next victims.
Less than 15 minutes later, gunshots were reported at the MSU Union building, a popular spot for students to eat, drink and study just a 10-minute walk from Berkey Hall.

His father Michael, 66, described him today as a ‘mama’s boy’ who turned ‘evil and mean’ after his mother Linda died suddenly three years ago. The pair lived together in McRae’s family home, that is around five miles from the MSU campus.
‘He was a mama’s boy. He loved his mom. They were tight. His mom was like his sister. Everything happened so fast,’ he told NBC News
‘He was grieving his mom. He wouldn’t let it go. He got bitter, bitter and bitter.
‘His mom died, and he just started getting evil and mean. He didn’t care about anything anymore.’
He said he encouraged his son to confide in him, referring to himself as ‘daddy’.
‘I said, “Talk to daddy. Let me know if something is on your mind. If you need help, I’ll get you help.”
‘He said, “I’m OK, dad, I don’t need help.”
McRae’s father says he told him he ‘got rid’ of his gun, but neighbors complained about him shooting in the backyard.
‘I said, “I hope you got rid of that gun, man.” And he said, “Yeah, I got rid of it. I got rid it.” He didn’t.’
Neighbors say he practiced shooting in the backyard.
‘He was firing a firearm out of the back door of the house into the yard. We’re right in the city.
You shouldn’t be firing a firearm in the middle of the city,’ Megan Bender, 34, told NBC.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is now investigating how he was able to obtain a weapon with a felony conviction.
‘He was ineligible to possess or purchase a firearm.
‘So one of the things that we’re going to need to know is how did he get that weapon? And can we put laws in place here in Michigan to ensure that a person such as himself who’s ineligible to own a firearm can never access one?’ she said.
‘So I expect to see a number of new laws put into place in short order, whether or not that would have prevented this particular offense from happening. I think the investigation will tell us that,’ she said in an interview.
