A teenager wanted for the alleged murder of a 62-year-old woman found buried in her backyard on Monday in Sao Paulo, Brazil was been arrested.
Leonardo Silva, 18, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in Frutal, Minas Gerais, about 50 miles north from the home of his alleged victim, Nilza Costa, in Barretos, São Paulo
The teen suspect flashed a smile at cameras as he was led out of the back of a police vehicle and escorted into a station. Silva allegedly, confessed to the crime after he was arrested by the Frutal Military Police, Brazilian outlet Tribuna Ribeirao reported.
Investigators confiscated a motorcycle that he allegedly purchased with money stolen from Costa’s bank account. Her cellphone and government identification card were also recovered from the suspect as well.
Barretos Civil Police chief Rafael Faria said Silva had been living in the back of Costa’s home and had told the victim that he was a woman.

Leonardo Silva was seen smiling at cameras as he was led to a police station in Brazil on Thursday. The 18-year-old was arrested in connection with the murder of Nilza Costa, a 62-year-old woman who was found buried in the backyard of her home Monday. Police said that Silva had been living in the back of the victim’s home and may have killed her to steal money from her bank account 

The body Nilza Costa, 62, [photo], was exhumed from her back the garden in São Paulo, Brazil, on Monday. Police said the alleged killer, Leonardo Silva, who had been living in the back of her property identified to the homeowner as a woman.

‘She would have welcomed this guy to live in her house, for reasons yet to be determined,’ Faria said. ‘Currently, he does not present himself as a transvestite.’
Costa’s buried body was discovered buried in her back garden on Monday after a concerned neighbor noticed that the entrance gate to the residence had been kept locked and neighbors had gone a week without seeing her.
The neighbor alerted the Civil Police made a welfare check. That person let police into the home with a with a spare key Costa left with them. While on the property, they walked over to the garden and noticed that soil had been disturbed.
Inspecting of the disturbed patch in the garden led to the gruesome discovery. Investigators spoke to another neighbor identified as Pedro Florentino, who recalled spotting a man sitting next to the Costa’s gate the previous week.

Florentino said he questioned the individual, who identified himself as being Costa’s nephew and from Minas Gerais city of Planura. However Florentino said, he knew something was off when he spoke to Costa’s family on Tuesday and was informed that she didn’t have any relatives in Planura.
Police chief Farias believes Silva choked Costa to death while she was sleeping: ‘There is a suspicion that she was killed by asphyxiation,’ Farias said.
‘Something that was found at first is that she could have been killed while she was sleeping and then this guy took her cell phone and wallet with bank cards.’
Silva will be held in custody for 30 days, but it his imprisonment could be extended for another 30 days or it could be changed to pre-trial detention.
