Convicted killer Daniel Cavalcante who broke out of jail a fortnight ago was nabbed by authorities Wednesday after evading search teams for two weeks by breaking into suburban homes for food and hiding out in the Pennsylvania woods.
Cavalcante, who escaped from Chester County Prison on August 31, was arrested without incident shortly after 8 a.m. when K9s sniffed him out lying underneath leaves and wood on top of a stolen rifle, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said.
The fugitive tried to “crawl through thick underbrush, taking his rifle with him as he went,” but a K9 subdued him, Bivens said.
“I don’t know that he was particularly skilled,” Bivens said at a press conference. “He was desperate.”
As he was escorted to a van by a SWAT team, blood was seen dripping down his face, the result of a minor K9 bite wound during his capture, according to Bivens.
Footage showed the double murderer wearing a gray Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, which was cut off by officers, presumably to search for hidden weapons.

The investigators took pictures of his tattoos once his shirt was off, to confirm his identity, before he was taken to a police station in Avondale for questioning.
It’s unclear how Cavalcante obtained the sweatshirt, though there had been reports of him breaking into residences.
Gov. Josh Shapiro urged the owner of the sweatshirt to come forward, saying he would do his best to get a new hoodie to them.

Residents in the area were alerted to his arrest via a reverse 911 call, CNN reported.
Cavalcante was nabbed shortly after police established a new search perimeter near South Coventry Township, where he was spotted Monday night, said CNN, which first reported news of the fugitive’s capture by officers of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Cavalcante who is a fugitive from murder charges in his native Brazil, escaped from the prison by wandering to a secluded area of the yard at Chester County Prison, scaling a wall, and climbing over razor wire before jumping from a roof to elude guards.

The already heated manhunt ratcheted Monday night into Tuesday after a homeowner reported firing seven shots at someone matching Cavalcante’s description who broke into his home in East Nantmeal Township.
The man fitting the fugitive’s profile allegedly stole a .22 rifle before fleeing.
Investigators descended on the location of the confirmed sighting and reportedly, found shoes they believe may belong to Cavalcante.

SWAT officers in armored trucks along with hundreds of other police officers on Tuesday searched the neighborhood after a helicopter caught a glimpse of the dangerous escapee in South Coventry Township. Two state police helicopters were hovering around the French Creek Elementary School area for most of the morning — near where the homeowner reported firing at the person who entered his home. 
State police were authorized to use lethal force if he did not surrender after it was reported that the violent felon was armed.

Investigators confirmed the escapee’s identity with the tattoos on his back, once his shirt was off

While on the run police advised the public that Cavalcante with a record of two kills, was armed and dangerous. At the time of his arrest, he was still in possession of a .22 rifle he stole from a homeowner’s garage Monday night.

A reverse 911 call was put out for residents of South Coventry, West Vincent and East Nantmeal townships by the Pennsylvania State Police, advising locals to lock their doors and windows, secure their vehicles and remain indoors.
The prisoner’s daring escape was caught on prison security cameras and showed the pint-size killer crab-walking up the walls.
An unidentified 18-year-veteran correctional officer on duty at the observation tower when Cavalcante escaped was been put on administrative leave.was fired on Thursday. The the guard who should have spotted Cavalcante on the roof, according to prison authorities, was ultimately fired last week.

More than 400 law enforcement officers had been assisting in the massive search for the 34-year-old killer described as “extremely dangerous.”
Just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, police shared new images of Cavalcante captured on a Ring camera in East Pikeland Township, Pennsylvania, showing a man believed to be the escaped murderer sporting a clean-cut look, instead of the scruffy beard and mustache he wore behind bars.
During the high-stakes manhunt, state police broadcast a message from Cavalcante’s mother in Portuguese in which she pleaded for her son to surrender.

Cavalcante was convicted on Aug. 16 of fatally stabbing his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, 38 times in April 2021. He committed the cold-blooded murder in front of Brandao’s 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.
Prosecutors claimed Cavalcante murdered Brandao because she may have threatened to alert police to an active warrant for his arrest for another alleged murder in Brazil, in 2017.
Last month, the Brazilian born killer, who speaks Spanish and Portuguese, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder. He was awaiting transfer to a state correctional facility to begin serving a life sentence when he made his break.
