A Chicago man learnt Wednesday, that he will be spending the rest of his life in prison for the murder of a police officer during a traffic stop in August of 2021.
At the conclusion of his murder trial back in March, Emonte Morgan, 24, was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer and possession of a firearm as a felon.
Morgan was accused of shooting at Ella French, Carlos Yanez Jr, and Joshua Blas during a traffic stop by the three officers of the Chicago Police Department.
Officer French was shot dead by Morgan in the West Englewood neighborhood on August 7, 2021 during a routine traffic.
Her partner, Carlos Yanez, was hit four times in the head and once in the shoulder leaving him partially paralyzed and blind in one eye, by the same shooter who was sitting in the SUV with his older brother, Eric Morgan.
Emonte Morgan then fired a shot at another responding officer officer, Joshua Blas, who escaped being hit.
On Wednesday, Cook County Circuit Judge Ursula Walowski sentenced Emonte Morgan to a mandatory life sentence, before tacking on another 57 years after listening to the impact statements of victims and family members.Â

According to the Chicago Tribune, French’s mother Elizabeth told the judge: ‘The memories, they sneak up on me sometimes and I am filled with grief and sadness.
‘I don’t know that closure will ever be possible for me. Someday my daughter and I will meet again. Until then I will miss Ella every day.’
After finishing her impact statement, French then turned to Morgan and addressed him directly.Â
She told him: ‘Sometimes life sucks. It sucked for me when you killed my daughter but life gives you choices.Â
‘There was your choice, to become the murderer of my daughter. Life in prison means you will still have your life, something you took away from Ella.’
Officer Yanez who was shot four times in the head and once in the shoulder described how the incident had left him blind in one eye and partially paralyzed.Â
Addressing Morgan, he said: ‘I would like to tell you, you have taken so much that night.Â
‘You killed Ella French and left me for dead. I was bleeding on the curb as you stood over our bodies.Â
‘I’m here before you today to say you will not take any more. I will continue to fight everyday like I did that horrific night.Â

‘I will never forgive you and I don’t care what excuses you have. You f****d up that night and took so much away.’
During the seven hour long sentencing hearing, emotions boiled over when officer Yanez’s father hurled expletives at Morgan from the witness stand.Â
The older Yanez, who is also a retired Chicago police officer himself, swore at Morgan and said someone should have killed him long ago.Â
As he did so, Evalena Flores, Morgan’s mother, yelled a insult about his son and she was quickly removed from the proceedings as Yanez Sr. said he hopes Morgan rots in jail. Back in 2021, Flores, 44, the mother of Emonte and Eric Morgan, was arrested after the Ella French killing when she wrestled with police after breaking into the hospital where Emonte was being treated for injuries he sustained in the fatal shootout.
Posting the break-in attempt and a monologue on Facebook live under the name ‘Marsia Outofthebox Braidy’ she wrote, ‘My boys are not monsters,’ and, ‘I don’t believe a damn thing CPD (Chicago Police Department) says.’

Prosecutors said that Morgan fired multiple shots at the officers after French and the two other cops stopped an SUV being driven by his brother Eric Morgan.Â
Eric Morgan, 25, last year September pled guilty to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon and obstruction of justice.Â
According to the terms of his plea deal, Eric will serve just seven years in prison for his role in the crime.

Pleading for leniency Morgan’s public defender Kristine Neal, told the judge that her client is not beyond redemption, can still be rehabilitated.Â
In contrast, an apparently unrepentant Emonte Morgan described the prosecution as unjust. The traffic stop that led to the shooting was unlawful and the death of officer French was accidental, the defendant said, just as his attorney argued at trial that footage of bodycam recording of the incident was unclear, making it hard to determine what actually transpired during the stop.Â

Enabling mom: ‘My boys are not monsters,’ the boys’ mother Evalena Flores, [photo], said in a Facebook live video. ‘I don’t believe a damn thing CPD says, and I can guarantee you this. My boys were afraid. I’m afraid … We fear our police hear. We don’t trust them’
Speaking with reporters after the hearing, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said: ‘There were choices that the defendant made on that evening that could have left a young woman alive, another officer uninjured and people going home safely to their families.
‘This ending, with a young man spending the rest of his life in prison, is what happens when one uses gun violence in the manner in which they did.’
After sentencing Yanez maintained: ‘I don’t think it’s justice. I’m not going to get closure.Â
‘I mean like, I’m affected for the rest of my life. So many people were affected by this.’
A third individual was also prosecuted in connection with the shooting. In December 2022, Jamel Danzy of Hammond, Indiana, received a 30-month sentence after he pled guilty to a federal firearms charge for buying the handgun used the suspect used in the shooting, in an illegal straw purchase.
Danzy who bought the gun from a licensed dealer in Hammond, Indiana, admitted to federal agents that he bought the weapon for someone who had a felony record and could not buy a gun for himself. That same weapon was found recovered when Eric Morgan was arrested on the night of French’s killing.
