A Springfield pastor has been granted bail two years after he allegedly shot his wife’s lover after he caught them at a restaurant together.
Matthew Dedmon, 49, has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action for the May 28, 2022, shooting of 57-year-old Joe Newburn.
Dedmon, a pastor at Heritage Baptist Church, reportedly trailed his wife and Newburn to the Iguana Roja Restaurante in downtown Ozark and confronted them.
Investigators said Dedmon drove his truck to 107 W. Church Street to talk to his wife. On arrival, he spotted his wife sitting in a truck with Newburn.
Dedmon witnesses said, got out of his truck holding a pistol and walked to the side where Newburn was sitting, with the intention of confronting the man he believed was having an affair with his wife.
The men struggled over the gun and the preacher shot three to four times, hitting Newman three times.
The mortally injured victim was found lying in the street. The father of five later died in hospital from his injuries.

Police arrested Dedmon shortly after the shooting. In the main, because his case has been caught in a legal fight over a ‘motion to endorse’ witnesses to testify at trial and discovery, he had been sitting in the Christian County Jail without bail or a trial, until October 1, 2024, when a judge granted him $30,000 bond.Â
In a previous motion denying Dedmon bail, Judge Laura Johnson said there was a risk the former pastor would flee and he could pose a risk to the public.
‘The evidence is that Defendant possessed a loaded gun on the square in Ozark outside a busy restaurant, and that gun was discharged three to four times, resulting in the victim’s death. This put everyone on the square in grave danger,’ Johnson said.
‘There was evidence that this conduct was out of character for Defendant, which causes concern about Defendant’s decision-making and judgment. The seriousness of the charge increases the risk that Defendant will not appear. For these reasons, the Court will detain Defendant without bond.’
He was finally granted bond with the conditions that he must wear a GPS monitor and will remain on house arrest – only being able to leave for court appearances and emergency medical attention.
Jail records show that as of Tuesday morning Dedmon has not been released.
Investigators said Dedmon drove to the square to talk to his wife when he saw her in a car with Newburn.
