A British businessman accused of trying drown his daughter-in-law in a swimming pool at a luxury resort was in romantic relationship with her, according to family members.
Authorities in Polk County, Florida charged Mark Gibbon, 62, from Buckinghamshire, UK, with attempted murder after allegedly holding Jasmine Wyld under water during a row over his will. Wyld has since returned to the UK.
Danger was averted when his nine-year-old granddaughter was allegedly forced to fight him off to stop him drowning her mother in a pool on their American holiday in Davenport, Florida.
Gibbon and Wyld, a 33-year-old hairdresser, began arguing over the ‘stipulations of his will’, when the former pushed Jasmine’s head ‘under the water and held her down multiple times’, according to the arrest affidavit.

Sources say Gibbon and Wyld have been in a quiet relationship for the last two years after their respective marriages broke down.
Following the crash of his marriage Mark Gibbon now single, lives at their high end terrace home in Beaconsfield.
Jasmine Wyld separated from Gibbon’s son Alex, with whom she shares two young children, in 2021.
Alex and his father are no longer on speak terms. Last year Alex Gibbon was jailed for attempting to run over his estranged father.
Family sources say ‘Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they’ve never admitted it.’

‘Alex and his dad don’t speak at all. There have been a number of issues within the family.
‘He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children.
‘Mark and Jasmine do an awful lot together and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year.
‘She is always round at his house. She has a place of her own but she’s nearly always in Beaconsfield with Mark.
‘They went to Florida two years ago and have been to Budapest where she posted pictures of them together like a couple.
‘I don’t know for sure what happened on this holiday and why Mark has apparently tried to drown her.
‘But I have been told that Jasmine was unhappy that they have been in a relationship for a few years and she is not named in his will.’

Wyld in the past has posted photos with her father-in-law on trips abroad. This time around it almost cost her life except that the nine-year-old jumped into the pool to try and save her mother when she witnessed her grandfather trying to plunge her under the water
Gibbon runs a successful lighting firm called MRG Lighting has working on television and film sets, as well as on music videos for Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith. However, another of his businesses Ultralight UK Limited, has seen its fortunes slide recently.
Gibbon also runs a fledgling hair salon called Sage Hairdressing Limited, set up in July 2024.
Mark Gibbon with an estimate net worth of $1.07million [£800,000], allegedly ‘is leaving everything to his grandchildren. His will has caused some tension in the family.’
Alex Gibbon, 34, had worked for his father’s at his film and television lighting firm and was appointed a director with Ultralight UK Limited in 2019.
Four years later he left the company and reportedly had a blazing row with his father in the street in the aftermath in May 2023. He then attempted to drive away in his Porsche Cayenne but his father jumped in front of him to stop him and was hit by the car.
Alex who pled guilty in February 2024, to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and harassment without violence, was sentenced to 25 months in prison, barred from driving for 36 months with a five-year restraining order.
Following his release from prison six months ago, Alex currently lives with his mother in Oxfordshire.

The father meanwhile took over the family, regularly holidaying with his son’s estranged wife and his two grandchildren. The pair traveled together with the children, but no other relatives, to Florida together in 2023 and visited Budapest, Hungary last December.
Gibbon has posted images of the quartet holidaying together, while Wyld has chronicled their foreign junkets, posting several photographs of trips her with her father-in-law has been spending an increasing amount of time staying over at his house with the children, family members and neighbors in Buckinghamshire all said.
Despite their apparent closeness, following a row last Sunday, Mark Gibbon had shoved Wyld’s head under the water of the pool and pushed his granddaughter away when she jumped in to stop him, according to the charging documents..
He allegedly only stopped the attempted drowning when two neighboring sisters saw what was happening and shouted over that they had called the Sheriff’s Office.

Gibbon was on a luxury holiday with his family at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, located near Disney World in Orlando, Florida when he got into an argument about his will, and the alleged murder attempt occurred
He was taken into custody around 5.19pm on August 3 and is understood to have told police he had been drinking and admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law under the water but denied trying to drown her.
Wyld ‘advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown. The victim advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under,’ according to the police report.
The Polk County Sheriff’s office charged Gibbon with attempted second-degree murder and battery. He is next due in court on September 9.
