Two Chicago police officers shot Saturday at hospital, one fatally, during prisoner transport for medical observation, fleeing suspect back in custody

One police officer of from the Chicago Police Department was killed and another is “fighting for his life” in Chicago after the officers were allegedly shot Saturday, at a hospital by a robbery suspect they were escorting to receive medical attention before he turned on them, hitting one of the officers in the head.
The fallen officer, who was not publicly identified, but according CPD was a 38-year-old, 10 year veteran of the department.
The survivor who was was only identified as a 57-year-old officer who has been with the department 21 years was “fighting for his life,” after being transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition, police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a press conference.
Both officers were attached to the 17th District.

The two police offers were shot on the north side of Chicago at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital by the detainee they escorted to the hospital for medical attention

The alleged shooter had been detained for attempted robbery, Supt. Snelling said. The officers were detailed to escort him to the Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the North Side.
The hospital in a statement, said the shooting happened around 10:45 am on Saturday after the officers brought the man for treatment.
The detainee had been checked for weapons and “was escorted by law enforcement at all times,” the hospital said in the statement, clarifying that neither hospital employees nor patients were hurt. 
A firearm was recovered during the investigation, according to authorities, who did not detail the sequence of events leading to the shooting and referred to the gun they found as a “third weapon.”

According to Chicago police, the yet to be identified suspect was back in custody at around noon after a manhunt.
“Today is a real difficult moment for our city. It’s a tragedy. Our officers stand in the way of harm every single day, risking their own lives, and along with them risking their lives, they have families that expect them to come home,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said Saturday, adding, “One of our officers will not be able to return.”
