Former U.S. soccer star Lauren Holiday has been diagnosed with a brain tumor while pregnant with her first child.  Lauren Holiday, 28, was a standout with the  U.S. women’s national soccer team. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and 2015 World Cup champion with the U.S. women’s  team. She learned in June of a benign tumor on the right side of her brain after she began experiencing massive headaches.
Her husband, New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday, is taking indefinite leave from the NBA club to care for his wife, with the blessing of  the Pelicans ball club.
In a statement from the Pelicans organization, Sunday , GM Dell Demps said: ‘We are all praying for a healthy delivery of their first child and a successful surgery for Lauren’. Adding ‘Furthermore, we ask everyone to respect the Holidays’ privacy at this time.’

Doctors in New Orleans,  said the tumor is both operable and unlikely to threaten the health of the child.
“Lauren has her good days and her bad days,” Jrue, 26, said of his wife: “Some are better than others. She’s obviously a fighter, the toughest woman I know. That’s the reason why I married her.”

Lauren Holiday retired in the prime of her soccer career to start a family with husband and NBA point guard Jrue Holiday, but the recent diagnosis has shaken their lives during the couple’s first pregnancy.
Doctors plan to perform Lauren’s brain surgery about six weeks after the birth. Both procedures are expected to be conducted at Duke University Hospital. From there, Jrue’s return to the Pelicans and basketball activities will be determined by her recovery.
The Holidays will reside near Lauren’s medical team in the Raleigh-Durham, N.C., area for the foreseeable future.
“The Pelicans have been great,” Holiday said. “There wasn’t any pressure to be with the team or to choose between my team and my wife. They told me to be a husband first. I don’t think they know how much their support means to me and my family.”

Lauren Holiday, who retired from soccer last year, was among the world’s most respected players during a career highlighted by Olympic gold medals with the U.S. national team in 2008 and 2012, and FIFA World Cup title in 2015.
The 28-year-old midfielder played in 133 games for the U.S. team, scoring 24 goals.
She also played professionally in the NWSL, winning a championship with FC Kansas City in 2015.The two athletes met at UCLA where Holiday played soccer, played basketball.
Jrue Holiday, 26, has been with New Orleans the past three seasons, but has spent most of that stint injured.

After her operation, Jrue will be a primary caretaker for both his wife and their daughter.
‘My family comes before basketball.
I’m obviously blessed to play this game and be in the position I am in, but my wife is the most important thing in the world to me. She comes before anything else’ Jrue Holiday said.
The birth also could be induced early.He said he and Lauren ‘are still very excited about the birth of our first child, but our focus shifted from having this magnificent blessing to making sure everything is going to be OK with Lauren and the child.’
He expects to return this season in full health, and the Pelicans see him as a core player along with All-Star forward Anthony Davis.

‘The most important thing for Jrue to do right now is be with his wife and family,’ Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said in a statement.
‘Every one of our coaches and players understands what Lauren and Jrue are going through, and they know we’re behind them 100 per cent.
‘We’ll continue to do everything we can to support them and help them get through these hard times.’

The Pelicans have suggested that Holiday, whose salary is thought to be around $11million a year, will continue to be paid during his absence.
The team is planning to send a trainer to North Carolina to help him maintain his fitness and basketball skills during his absence.
Demps added: ‘We encourage Jrue to take as much time as he needs to be with his wife and family before returning to the Pelicans.
‘We understand that Jrue will miss some games, and his teammates are prepared to step up in his absence,’ said Demps, whose own wife, Anita, is a cancer survivor and also has had a benign tumor removed from her brain.
‘We will welcome Jrue back with open arms when he is ready to return to the team.’
