a light rail train that left two people dead and another injured after they tried to intervene when the suspect launched into a hate-filled tirade.
Jeremy Joseph Christian was charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of second-degree intimidation and one count each of attempted aggravated murder and being a felon in possession of a restricted firearm, according to Portland Police. He is being held without bail in the Multnomah County Detention Center.

A third victim, 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher remains in a Portland hospital being treated for serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was arrested as he tried to flee the train.
The incident occurred while the Christian was riding on a MAX light rail train. Witnesses said he was targeting two women whom police said were possibly Muslim — one of whom was wearing a hijab.

The victims tried to calm the man down, cops said. But he wasn’t having it, and stabbed them before trying to take off.
The Portland Mercury reports that Jeremy Christian is fairly well-known in the area as a white supremacist with extreme right-wing views. He was spotted at a “March for Free Speech” in Montavilla last month, armed with a baseball bat and wearing an American flag as a cape.

His bat was quickly confiscated by police after he attempted to assault left-wing protesters which prompted a rant in which he described himself as a Nihilist, according to the Portland newspaper. He also shouted racial slurs throughout the day and was photographed giving the Nazi salute.
Christian will be arraigned Monday.
The fatal incident unfolded on a MAX light rail train — witnesses said a man began targeting a pair of women who police said were possibly Muslim. One of them was sporting a hijab at the time.
Both women fled the scene before officers arrived.
“In the midst of his ranting and raving, some people approached him and appeared to try to intervene with his behavior and some of the people he was yelling at,” Sgt. Pete Simpson told the Oregonian.
“They were attacked viciously.”
The suspect whose criminal record includes felony robbery, kidnapping and weapon convictions, slit two of the victims’ throats before trying to escape. Police arrested him in Portland around 4:30 p.m. as he tried to flee on foot and turned him over to homicide detectives.
In a twist of irony, the suspect’s mother, Mary Christin, told the Huffington Post early Saturday she struggled to believe that her son could be capable of the train attack.
“It’s scary,” she said. “I can’t imagine he would do anything like this, unless he was on drugs or something. He’s been in prison, he’s always been spouting anti-establishment stuff but he’s a nice person. I just can’t imagine.”
