A Chicago woman has been charged with filming and posting the rape of her unconscious 23-year-old friend on Snapchat after the two fought over a man they met at a party.
Prosecutors say Beth Rae Harris, 36, and the victim got into a fight over a mutual acquaintance, Assistant State’s Attorney Nora Gill said Thursday during a bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
They later made up and went out together for a night of clubbing, ending at a hotel party where the victim drank heavily. Harris and the victim then returned to Harris’s Chicago apartment on the 7400 block of North Artesian Avenue where the victim passed out, prosecutors said.
That’s when Harris allegedly encouraged at least one, or possibly more, males to rape the 23-year-old – while she was unconscious.
The victim woke up the next morning completely naked, and sore. Harris told her as she left that a man had sex with her while she was passed out, the Assistant State’s Attorney said.
Upon arriving home, the victim’s ordeal worsened when she immediately discovered there were videos posted to her Snapchat account that showed her being raped.
Harris reportedly appears in videos posted to the victim’s Snapchat account insulting the 23-year-old and even narrating the rape at times, according to followers who viewed the post.
In the video, the victim lay naked as an unidentified man grabbed her buttocks and exposed her vagina to the camera, Nora Gill said at the bond hearing.
The suspect allegedly can be heard narrating the assault on the video, at one point warning the man not to wake the victim. Harris also recorded video of herself calling the victim names and claiming the victim had slapped her, Gill said.
The videos were seen by Snapchat users and Harris was identified as the person who recorded and disseminated the videos of the rape, according to authorities.
Harris was arrested and charged with non-consensual dissemination of sexual images. She is currently being held at Cook County Jail where bail was set at $150,000 on Thursday.
Police said no one else has been charged in the sexual assault because authorities are yet to identify the man or men involved in the assault. An investigation into the rape is ongoing.
The mother-of-three according to her attorney said she works as a masseuse and a model.
Her priors include convictions for battery, reckless conduct, resisting arrest and aggravated battery to a peace officer. She currently has cases pending for probation violation and an unrelated case for criminal damage to property.
