Seven inmates were killed during fights that lasted more than seven hours at a South Carolina prison Sunday night and into early Monday, according to officials.
17 more inmates were injured after fights broke out at the Lee Correctional Institution in South Carolina at 7:15pm.
The prison was secured around 3am Monday morning. No staff members were killed or injured in the ‘mass casualty’ incident. The maximum-security facility in Bishopville houses about 1600 inmates, some of South Carolina’s most violent and longest-serving offenders. The prison has a turbulent recent history. Two officers were stabbed in a 2015 fight. One inmate killed another in February.
