The prime suspect in the murder of a doctor who once treated George HW Bush is a former cop who wanted to run a concealed handgun instruction academy and allegedly held a 20-year grudge over the death of his mother on the operating table.
Joseph James Pappas, 62, is accused of following Dr Mark Hausknecht on his bicycle and fatally shooting him three times as he cycled to work in his blue doctor’s scrubs through Houston, Texas, on July 20.
Dr Hausknecht was cycling from his home to the Houston Methodist Hospital in his blue medical scrubs when Pappas allegedly approached from behind and shot him in the torso and head
Pappas, who is said to be suicidal and armed with multiple weapons, had allegedly been plotting to kill Dr Hausknecht since the death of his mother, Julia Alice Walker, while in Dr Hausknecht’s care in April 1997 at the age of 69.
Pappas, who was unmarried and had no children, once worked as an armed deputy constable for Harris County Precincts 2 and 7.
He had lived alone in his family’s three-bedroom house since the death of his father, Joseph James Pappas I, in 2010.
