The body of Tania Wise was discovered in a ditch with her unborn child a week before her due date, along a desolate stretch of road in St. Lucie County, Florida, on Aug 24
Wise, 23, a mother-of-one, was pregnant with her second child, a son she had named Josiah and scheduled to have a cesarean section the week after her death
Her boyfriend Jose Soto-Escalera has been charged in her death
DNA results revealed that Soto-Escalera, 41, was the father of the child, and multiple people saw his truck near Wise’s house and where the body was found
He was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Wise and Josiah
Soto-Escalera is married with four children, and his wife did not know that he had gotten Wise pregnant, police said
Sheriff Mascara also used the press conference on Friday to explain why it took so long to make an arrest.
‘In those days, our detectives, crime scene technicians and crime lab scientists have been piecing together the final moments of Tania’s life,’ he explained.
‘Today, the final piece of this puzzle has been put in place.’
The suspect Jose Soto-Escalera was arrested while driving his wife’s car and had a handgun in his possession a the time of his arrest.
He was then transported to St. Lucie County Jail where he has remained over the weekend.
